nice first attempt steve. in my opinion, i would have turned the model around, facing the flowers (not being pushed out of the frame), and then moved and turned a bit so as to remove that pole on the left side. i'm no expert on portraits mind you.... but that's what i would have done.

yes, i know what you mean, and i battled with that same issue myself. The thing that made me keep it like this in the end was i took a whole heap of other pictures all with the girl centred in the framing and nothing in the foreground... piled in with all those photos, this one had a uniqueness to it.

The trouble with that bright background, particularly the flowers on the right, is that they fight for attention with the portraitee. The framing is also such that she is being pushed out of the picture.
