About a drug that induces euphoria, banishes pain and stimulates creativity -- is also a one way ticket to slavish dependency.

Its long, bizarre and shocking history began in ancient times in the Near East, India and China.

Regarded as an embodiment of the romantic East, embraced by writers as Sir Authur Conan Doyle, Oscar Wilde, Rudyard Kipling, Graham Green, Jean Cocteau.

From Opium is derived morphine, a drug whose medical use in the easing of great pain by far counterbalance its abuse by addicts. But from morphine, heroin is derived, and heroin has become one of the two great scourges of modern society.

HongKong addicts can buy something that is 40% pure. All that Europeans and Americans can buy is 5% pure. "Chasing the Dragon" amounts to instant gratification by inhaling the fumes of number three heroin when heated on on a piece of aluminium foil. White Pearl Dragon is 50% pure, which Hongkongese grind and mix with ordinary tabacco, and have their fixes by inhaling short, deep drags (shooting the ack-ack gun).

LONDON (Reuters) - A jailed cocaine dealer is working as Santa Claus on day release from a British prison.
John Tams, who dons beard, boots and red suit to work in a cafe's Christmas grotto, said he wanted to give something back to the community.

"They know who I am and that I've done wrong but they have welcomed me with open arms," the 50-year-old said after helping to build the grotto with a fellow inmate.

Both are on a day release programme from a jail in Yorkshire, northern England.

"There were carefully risk-assessed. They do not pose any threat to the public," said a spokesman for the Home Office (Interior Ministry).

Very interesting IT. Amazing how so many drugs come from one plant... you forgot Codeine and Demerol. Like any medicine large doses lead to poisoning. Great shot. I love the atmosphere you created.

Never tried it myself, but then again, never been to India or China, and most important, never wanted to be enslaved to it.
