Hi Mark. I'd just like to politely add my opinion on your ongoing tension with ppdix...You've been baiting him for a long time, and I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve? The way I see it is that we should all be grateful he shares his work with us. Patrick has been extreemly generous with helping me improve, and I have loads of respect for him. We have to remember that he is not here to get our tips, a successful guy like him has loads of confidence in his ability already, given that he is doing what most of us would love to do...make money from his art! Okay so maybe he appears a little harsh here and there, but its all a bit of fun for him as I know he is actually one of the sweetest people I know. Good on him for being honest. Not many UF users say it how it is.
So I'd suggest you chill and not get so nasty and competitive with him.

Dear Wayne, His photo "Pam". Just trying to give him some lighting advice. Not that I'm any kind of expert but thought it could be better. Take a look and see what you think. Take care, Mark

Now that the front page has changed just want to say thanks to everybody's nice comments. I was just trying to point out something to Patrick (pp) and, as usual, he takes it all wrong (as I see from the comments here and on his shot I'm definitely not flying solo on that point). I don't always get my lighting right but I try (plus using a Mac G4 has made a big difference in accuracy as far as tone and brightness go, my PC laptop didn't match what would come up on UF nearly as close). I must say I also had a fantastic lighting teacher at UCLA , Bobbi Lane (www.bobbilane.com) and if you're close to LA, NYC, Santa Fe (NM), or Maine and interested in really learning about light her classes / seminars are well worth it - she's a "natural born teacher". You can see on her website that she really knows her stuff (her work is also featured in the book "The Lighting Cookbook" by Jenni Bidner (Amphoto). Thanks again, Mark PS. Dear Ashley, I know all about it. I could tell you were quite young but you were very polite in your comments on pp's shot and I couldn't believe how strong he was coming back at you. It really ticked me off - he just doesn't know when to put the brakes on .....

You caught her eyes just perfectly. There's something distracting about the lower left corner, however, that takes my eyes off her eyes(I'm guessing that's the subject of the pic). I can't pinpoint what's distracting, though. Maybe it's the position of her arm, or how here hair gets a bit fuzzy at the bottom. I read your comment telling ppdix to take a lighting class. It made me laugh. I once told him that I didn't like his lighting and thought it looked a bit unprofessional, and I nearly lost my head!! Ashley

This is a beautiful portrait, Mark. I must be honest with you....I took some delight in your "scuffle" with PPdicks. I'm not joining in the fray, suffice to say that I agree wholeheartedly that his ego is outa control. Perhaps it is the contentious mood that I found myself in, after indulging in your jousting, that brought me to your portfolio. First let me say that I am very impressed with your technical abilities. In the cases where you are taking serious shots, the lighting and perspective is excellent. I'm glad to see that you don't lack a sense of humor...it comes through in many of your shots. Your political ideals come through quite clearly as well, and I for one, prefer to try to keep art/entertainment and politics seperate. GOD...how many musicians have I fallen out of touch with, because they BORE me with their perspectives of "the world..as they see it". I look at their art, I listen to their music, I attend their shows to feed my eyes, ears, and mind....not to be lectured on politics. Having said that (I digress), your work is really impressive, I could do without the liberal slant, but oh well...that's just me. I understand that others opinions are often considered "part of their work". And yes, Dennis Hopper RULES.

Mark, This is a beautiful portrait with wonderful tones contrast & lighting. I must be honest though what brought me to your page was your critique of ppdix featured on the front page. My group of friends has had a few rounds with him, his attitude & approach are often harsh & rude. This is a page to learn from other photographers, and when one of my friends, (or someone who knows how to give constructive critism without wounding) I am very open to it. Folks like pp can be very discouraging for new photographers, that is not the point of this website. I want to thank you for putting it to him straight. Maybe next time he will think before he types; we can only hope. Dottie

Mark, I like the way that the tangles of hair sort of frame the eyes. It distracts from her eyes a little at first, but then the strands of hair draw you into the eyes upon a longer viewing, making the phot more interesting in the long run. Does that make sense?
Nice work Andre
