I did a little research to refresh my memory (long live Google!) and confirmed what I had suspected. These animals are a species of Oryx, highly endangered antelopes from the Sahara and the Arabian peninsula. Conservation projects are underway and some animals have been reintroduced to their original habitats in Oman, Yemen, and may be some other countries.
