Cheryl, this is definitely a male cardinal. Females and even male juveniles have very different coloring (more muted). He is indeed beautiful, one of my favorite birds.

Now how do you know it's a boy? You can see that I'm not a big bird watcher - but he's a cutie. Very nicely shot - the DOF is wonderful. The color is amazing.
