Toni,
Yes, that would have been the plan. But, unfortunately, although it was almost 70 degrees, there was still far too much snow up there to get to where these cars were. Later on in the season I will try again. The cars are in a farmer's field within a twenty minute walk from the cottage. (on a day with less snow)

Oh! If the car is there will you have him pose just the same!? I would think that would be grand to have. "Open our cottage for the summer." That sounds so wonderful -- it is near this graveyard. Hope you have a wonderful time. Antonia

Toni,
The little boy in this photo is actually my 40 year old brother. The two of us are going back to the same site tomorrow to open up our cottage for the summer. Now that I have redone these photos, I am interested to see if there is anything left of these cars and trucks. I may let you know in pictures.

I'm working my way back through your portofolio in search of 30-40-50 mph and stumbled into this (I see loads I need to look at by the way...lol). This is yet another treasure. I love your taste in these and could create a gallery of them in my home if I had room. Perhaps you have done that yourself. This has so much going for it in terms of mood and memories. Fantastic. It makes me want to go find an auto graveyard and do the same with my kids. Now you've got me thinkn. Antonia

Hayden,

I bet there are thousands of farmer's fields like this one. It seems that when a family car or truck finally dies, out it goes to the back forty.
Thanks for visiting.

Matt,
If you like this one, go back further in my portfolio and look at the other "Photographer's Apprentice" photos.
I'm glad you like this print so much.

Just read your comment and had to look at the photo again!

That bonnet smile & the kids are just great. Still making me smile 10 viewings later! I just can't stop myself looking.

Matt,

Thank you for the great comments on this photo. As I've said before here, the photos that I took on this shoot, I believe are some of the best work I have ever done.
I have never got so many printable images over such a short period of time. Now digital has given them a whole new life. The bonus is that I get to show them off here.
There was no intention at all of matching up the apparent auto bonnet smile with the boy's smile. Funny how we see things in each-others work!

Thanks again,
Andre

Andre,

This is a wonderful shot with a great tonal range. It's rustic look and timeless feel are a result of the sepia toning which is most apt!

I'm pleased to find a 70's picture that appeals to me and very happy that you've pulled this from the archives to present it.

Final point - the car in the background has a bumper/bonnet that looks as if it's smiling at me! Kinda like the kids UK TV program Ivor The Engine! This is echoed by the childs expression and make for a wonderful, if maybe not even intentional, composition!

Best regards
Matt

Thanks Kelly,

I have got a lot of mileage out of this old photo shoot. I took a lot of very satisfying photos over that one weekend. All the photographer's Apprentice series, amongst some others were shot over two sessions of about an hour and a half each. I have printed several over the years, and now I am still fooling around with them digitally.

This is a wonderful shot, the black and white works well here, I love the old car, looks more like a boys paradise play area.. very nice.
