About i'm back... i think... after a long hiatus i felt the itch to post again. can't wait to actually go out shooting again ;^)

04.10.2005: the artist's palette in death valley national park. this is a portion of the furnace creek formation and is a wonderful display of a multitude of minerals deposited millions of years ago when this area was a lake. the colors are beutiful at sunset as the sun hits them directly. alas, we arrived just a tad too late and it was mostly in shadow. btw, can you spot the photographers?

some harranguing with PS to make it look the way it did a few minutes earlier ;^) mostly contrast, color balance and exposure compensation. no cloning. no cropping. actual data: 1/2 sec @ f/11, ISO 200, tripod.

i know it's not the greatest composition, but the multitude of color fascinates me. what do you guys think? any and all comments and suggestions are most welcome.

Great shot Tom and nothing wrong with the comp. DV is one of the places that I shall visit, preferably on the back of my motorbike, together with patagonia and the atacama...

This photo makes me think of the rock formations and colors that you can see of the knersvlakte on Joggie's and my portfolios. Humbling stuff.

Hya Tom, show yourself, wherever you are....:) Can't wait till we get there! This looks so awesome, with the people adding a reference to the size of these minerals...

I've been back now for at least three weeks...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

hi gayle, thank you so much! glad you like it. i really enjoy going out there as the colors are amazing. oft times you have to hunt them down and help them out a bit and other times they just jump out at you. i have some other shots of this area in better light but have been waiting for my ps skills to catch up as they're not very well exposed.

i know :( i haven't uploaded for some time. actually i have a few lined up but i've been waiting for the uf upgrade. hopefully the image size will be increased which will give me a bit more latitude.

thanks again,
tom

Hi Tom, I misteriously managed to miss this one... .Me being away from Usefilm too long might just have to do with that, considering you posted this one a while ago...

Fantastic colours and rich details. It took me a while to spot the photographers, but I'm glad I did; they are a perfect reference to the sheer size, answering my question before I could make an ass of myself by asking. Well composed shot. Good decision to visit your portfolio again!

Cheers,

Hugo

PS: I'm back too, I think....;)

I think the composition's just grand. I see a sort of zig-zag pattern formed by the inclines as they go off in the distance. The photographers in the distance is great for a sense of scale. Also memories; I hiked out to where they were. Nice colors over there, no matter what time of day. It's just different. I can even see the slight tinge of sunset on the upper left and right. Good to have you back, Tom. Cheers!

I like the large scense of scale Tom. Good to see a new post from you. I thought of your work when seeing a news story on the 100 year bloom in Death Valley this spring. Seems all the rain they got brought the valley to life, for a while...

Tom:

People are good for the scale of the surroundings - probably makes the composition for me. The blue is the most striking color, the contrast against the complimentary red really makes it pop.
