Eric,

You've got quite a bit of contrast in this image for a full moon. Good work.

I paid about $400 for a spotting scope version of the Meade ETX90 a few years ago. About another $100 you can get the adapters to mate the scope with a 35mm film camera or a digital camera. With a focal length of 1250mm it is great for shooting the moon. Or great for looking at ships in the bay, etc. At f/14 it is a little slow, but pretty good bang for the buck.

I agree, Eric, this is a better shot, and the other one was great. I see this with my telescope, but never thought it possible with a camera. That is some lens you have! I'll bet your printed version is grand.

Mike,

For the money, I think the 100-400mm is an awesome lens. The 400mm (non zoom) is like $7000 bucks. In contrast, the 100-400 is only $1400 or so. The 2x extender is another $300... So I get the flexibility of a zoom, IS, USM, the 2x Extender, etc. All well worth the money.

If I had taken this with a telescope, it would have had tons more detail. I've seen telescopes that were much less expensive than the Canon EF 400mm lens, as well. I'm not quite there yet and Astrophotography really isn't what I'm looking to do so it's a little hard to justify a couple grand on something like that.

That said -- if any of my kids ever get into astronomy -- There's my excuse! :)

I like the frame of the black sky around it, though I'd recrop it to be a bit more symmetrical. Great shot, though--the moon is a tricky bit of exposure to capture well.

I have seen great shots like that through a telescope, and was thinking you had captured the shot through one, you have now piqued my interest in getting a longer lens, my 300 wouldn't let me do that! What was your exposure for this critter, and I guess seeing it is digital there was no reciprocity failure, does that still occur with digital? I have had some teething problems with my digital with night lightning shots.

Hehehe. Actually, I shot this with my new 100-400mm lens with a 2x extender -- Yeah, I cropped it (obviously) but there was a ton of detail left in what was left of it. I did lose some detail in resizing it, but the printed version is amazing (not to mention a ton-of-ink!)
