I did consider a blur on the BG - and actually started with the mask - but then thought I would just throw it out there for some comments.

Thank you very much for your advice here - I will certainly give that a go - i hadn't actually thought of darkening the bg on this shot... watch this space for an improved version :)

Great capture! I like how you've framed and presented it. I'm thinking maybe it could be improved with a little more post processing to make the bird stand out from the background. Perhaps blur and slightly darken the water and single out the bird and lighten and sharpen him a bit? This would give a bit more separation than there is.
