About Questa è una foto particolare.

This is a peculiar photo.
Filippo Severati was a painter, specialized in portrait, in the Italy of XIX Century. He was then "fighting" against the newborn photography. Being a genius, he fought and won this impossible fight against the new wave of photo portrait in the only field where this new instrument couldn't counter and oppose his expertise: the durability and resistance of the portraits for cemeterials tombstone. He invented a process, which practically died with him, being his only assistant and disciple incapable of perpetuating his art, of a long and complex process to fix a portrait on lava stone mixing colours with enamel. The final result was a portrait which could literally resists environmental aggressions, sun, rains, wind, without deteriorating at all. The portrait shown here is dated 1882: it has seen many seasons, years ,wars ... nonetheless it is still there, in excellent conditions, taking into account the context.
This picture is therefore a tribute to him and to his art and craftsmanship. It is bizarre that this tribute is made through the same new and "diabolic" instrument, which he was so valiantly fighting: the photography. For those who have the fortune (or "misfortune", considering traffic and air / noise pollution ... ) of living in Rome, there is the concrete chance of watching a "permanent exhibit" of Severati's works at the monumental Cemetery of "Verano", where around 200 of this portraits can be seen "en plein air".

Thanks Ellen. I've had a look at your pictures and I do really understand your artistic sensitivity and interpretation of photography. I perfectly agree with you: pictures give me too a chance of watching and experiencing other worlds and explore others' people minds.
Thanks. Lodovico
