Another one of those 4 toads singing on one warm June evening. Was fun to watch how the vibrations from the throat trilling resulted in the concentric ripples around the toad.
Kim, yes, I was sitting right at the water's edge, held the camera 3 or 4 feet away from him. At night, when frogs and toads are in mating season, it is much easier to get close to them. This was one of a group of 4 toads who were trying to outdo each other with the trilling. When I first arrived and sat on the rock, they stopped and watched me warily for a minute, then I imitated their trilling, and all four of them broke out into chorus. They were not about to be outsung by this new "intruder".
I love how the ripples frame the frog... it's has a lot of visual impact! Great shot! Did you have to get really close to him to snap this shot? I've found frogs to be very skittish.
Chelsea, this is simply wonderful! If you ever get another opportunity, do whatever you can to get this image on film! The distended vocal sac and ripples in the water graphically show this fellow's behavior. After seeing this, I'm going to be on the lookout for something similar! It really is a perfect image!
