ha ha ha
That was the point of the shot !!!
I was showing Nige how to meter using Manual mode (in at the deep end - the only way IMHO) and pointed it at those balconies and said "That's bout 2/3 stop above black, so set it to "-1 1/3" and it'll come out about right!
did dodge it a little though
Cheers

I think the whole compo is spot on Ade. The only thing I find slightly distracting are the shadows from the balconies of the central building. Just make that face of the building dark. Neat shot mate. Den

Cheers Marilyn - fair comment about the building. It's actually an old pub called the red Lion I think??
Never been in as it's full of men who like men, so not really my scene.
You can post up your edited versions you know - just below the comment box there's a Browse button, clikc on that, select your photo (has to be 500 pixles though) and away you go.
Cheers

Fantastic sky and composition, Aide! Excellent use of the railing to lead the eye in! Best regards, Chris P.S. The 20D was never an option for me ~ I could never have got two of those past the wife!! )

Abe, I love the photo esp. the clouds. Looks like a painting. I love how the eye travels from the railing up the canal. Only thing I would suggest is cloning out the that white building to the right or coloring it the same as the other buildings. Looks like a robot. I did it and looks fine. Sorry can't show you because not a donor yet, but soon I hope. Always help on my photos is appreciated as well. Marilyn

always glad to be of help Ken!
the other tip is.....
when you're doing a B+W shot in Photoshop and want the clouds to REALLY stand out, add a red filter layer first. That makes the blues in the sky go virtually black when you add a Channel Mixer layer afterwards.

great composition Ade, lovely colours, so many things to see, but not too busy as the railings, with the gorgeous bright yellow flowers, keep the eye focused - and you travel round the image. Love the little balconies on the left Margaret THanks for all your comments

I've just been working on another shot - taken 3 minutes before the above.
Decided to go B/W on this as the contrast between the sky and foreground was so high I thought it'd come out better B+W.
Put a red filter layer on in PS then B+W with Channel Mixer

Cheers for your kind comments P.J.
I think the thing that impressed me most about the 20D yesterday was the 5 frames per sec - sounded like a machine gun firing when he hit the shutter!!!
you're right about the polaiser effect on this - I was facing away from the sun at a 70 degree angle so was getting a changeable polarising effect. Sometimes it works for me, others I try to balances it with a ND grad filter on the lighter side.
I was debating over the balcony as well funnily enough.
in the end I left it there to give a feel of enclosure - to show there wer buildings close by. But now you mention it, it probably would be better removed.
Thanks for your interest - very helpful comments
Ade
