Hi Bobby,
Yes it was done using layers with a color blend, but not with a colour photo. I did manual recoloring using a brush in PS, first sampling the right colour from a colour photo.. so it only served as a visual aid for choosing the right colour.. meticulous work i know, but worth the effort and very satisfying ;-)

Excellent work such a combination of stakness and softness. I like the hard dark shape of the gate then the eye goes through and sees the rows of trees. The framing of the trees again for me gives this feeling of hard and soft, I keep wanting to keep looking to be able to describe what I see
