EXCELLENT Ronnie, As usual it's a wonderful photograph with superb quality and composition.
I didn't like the tail cut off either, but I see where you addressed that one, so I understand.
Very nice work, Lori :)

Hello Mary, About cutting the tail out of the image. I did that because the tail is so long if you include it the Mayfly's body appears small in the image. ****************** I am curious about how far away you were from this mayfly? When I'm using all 68mm of extension I'm normally about 24" away as measured from the end of the lens. ****************** Also, do you use a remote shutter to fire the camera? No, I use the D100's self timer and Anti-shock feature. Normally I set the self timer to the 2 second setting. If I have the tripod exended all the way up I set the self timer to 5 seconds. ****************** When I've tried to shoot something similar, it seems like the bug has come and gone by the time I've set up the tripod, fumbled with the camera settings, etc That is a problem. Yes, I don miss many shots trying to set up. I have all settings on my camers set to manual so it does take a few second to set the camera. You just need to have patience and stick with it. The results are well worth the effort.
Ronnie

Ronnie, I am always impressed with how your photos are sharp as a tack, and the creatures you shoot seem totally undisturbed by your camera, tripod, etc. I am curious about how far away you were from this mayfly, or really about how far away you are able to position yourself from most subjects. I know the 300mm lens will allow you some distance, but I'm not sure what effect the extension tubes have on the working distance.
When I've tried to shoot something similar, it seems like the bug has come and gone by the time I've set up the tripod, fumbled with the camera settings, etc.
Also, do you use a remote shutter to fire the camera?
I hope you do not mind these questions, but you seem to do such a terrific job. I just want to learn!
Oh, on this image, which is terrific, I only wish the tips of the mayfly tail were in the frame. I've never actually seen a mayfly, so maybe it is all there!
