Phillip, under those circumstances, you did a great job. However, having just one backdrop color limited you very much. There is another portrait from this same shoot of a girl with very pale skin. This color backdrop makes her look like a ghost. I would suggest investing in a set of colored gels for your studio lights. It's a very cost effective way to change the background color. They are light, and quick and easy to change and give you a much wider variety of colors to complement differing skin tones. As for getting an assistant, it may not be as hard as you think. Ask a friend or family member. Or find someone at the shoot who would like to make $25.00 (or whatever you can afford) All they have to do is a quick check of the subject. And a lot of people think it's fun to help. I used to work as an assistant to a wedding and sports team photographer. When we were shooting on location, we always looked for an extra body to help with the detail work. That left me more time to concentrate on looking after the equipment, frame count, paperwork, and such. Next time, just ask someone, you may be surprised at how easy it is.

Here's some background info on the yearbooks pics I've been posting. I won 2 bids to take pictures for the yearbook at the local college. There going to CD ROM this year due to losing money over the past years.
I shot from 11:00 to 1:00 for a week. The students were informed about the me being on site to take pictures through e-mails and fliers. I was located in what the call the Game Room in the University Center, across from the cafeteria. They came on there own accord. I really didn't have any idea how many, or what kind of shape they would be in while taking the pictures. Remember your college days. Ray, Most definately I would like to have had an assitant on the set. I took one canvas backdrop with me, and my lighting kit. I don't know who was more tired at times, me or the students. ;)
Regards,

Excellent portrait! Simple and straightforward. Personally, I like the choice of colors for the sweater and background. The muted tones let the color in her face dominate the picture, drawing your view right to her eyes as it should. Minor criticisms: Stray hairs. Get someone to help you with detail work. You concentrate on the camera, and the assistant concentrates on the little details like hair and lint and clothing tags showing, etc. Also, there is just a tad bit of a hot spot on the tip of her nose. A little translucent powder might have helped. But overall, I think you nailed this one. What was Najir's response when you showed her this print?

Philip you're still getting better and better with your portrait photography! I can see the effort of your metering and lighting that you got advice from our former member...???....LOL has really helped you right along. Great job! I personally would have liked to see her in red or blue but that is just a personal opinion. Some people just probably don't really like those colors. I would tho:)
