Thanks a lot for the constructive and detailed comments, Mark.

You're right, because of health problems, my concentration does go! However, I did use the feather tool, and I'm better at the tolerance now. The main thing that bothers me with this image, is the direction of the shadows, (at right angles to the moon!) The temple was taken from an old daylight photo, in Cyprus.

Regards

Colin

Colin,
A very nice piece of work ... especially for a first effort. Before getting to the technical side, where I won't say much, as I am not skilled in this area myself ... I think you did a super job of conceptualizing the entire image you wanted to create.
With respect to the finished piece, it looks as if you may have gotten a little tired ... because a few minor alterations would help. For example, the moon needs some adjustment using the clone tool to fix the clipped left edge. Use of the feather tool would create some more realistic overlay of the different layers. And, as I said, I suspect you know these tactics, but you may have just run short on time.
Congrats!

Thanks Margaret.
Yes, I'm a recent visitor to the strange world of Photoshop. I first fiddled with it a year ago, to add some basic effects to some concert photos. But this image is my first using layers. and I'm working on a couple of others. I think I'm hooked...

Really interesting PS - if you are 'just learning' you are a quick learner great stuff,
Margaret
Thanks for your comment - yes I really like this image, and had to resist the tempation to mess about with it straight away, but I will be 'playing'

Thanks Steve,
That film passed me by, although I like scifi/horror.

I've modified this image now, added better shadowing, and of course, repaired the moon, where the great, space rat has been nibbling it!!

I might resubmit it in the future. Although, I'm working on others at present.

Regards
Colin

Sorry about that Colin - it is a scifi film, like a cross between starwars and indianna jones and definitely intended as a compliment as it is one of my alltime favourite films lol

Best wishes,
Steve

That's much appreciated, Jeff.

For some reason, the moon got clipped when I converted from psd to jpg, as the original is fine. I'm not sure whether to resbumit it, as I want to do some more new photoart soon!

Regards

the other Cartwright.

Thanks, Ferdinand.

This photoart was inspired by some of the great images on this site,(plus new and old photos I had). Also, I went to Umbria, Italy, a few years ago, and was interested in the Etruscans, who had a civilization there centuries before the romans.

Thanks for more encouraging advice, Judi. I was pleased about the moonlight effect, as the original temple photo, from 1996, was in bright cypriot sunshine!
The slice out of the moon happened when converting psd to jpg, for some reason. I'm not sure whether to remove the image and repair it.

Thanks for your swift comment, judi. Shouldn't you be having a couple of glasses of that great aussie wine, on a saturday night, to celebrate your 2nd prize award!!

Very beautifully done. I am so pleased you are giving this a try. Now do you mind if I give you some tips. These are not meant as a critisicm....but as a way to help you get to where you want.

Try using your feather tool...this will give you a better edging on your selections.

The moon is missing a part of the left hand side. If this is a cropping of a photo than try rebuilding that section either by cloning or duplicate a section of the moon onto a new layer and transforming it into position.

Try putting the clouds over the other layer using the Overlay or Multiply blend modes. If you have a look at Golden Cliffs the sky was from another image...!!!

But the way you have put them together is well done. The light is almost spot on. So you are definitely heading in the right direction.

Thanks efrain, To answer your question, I bumbled through this, using lots of trial and error! But I know of a text book - "Adobe photoshop 7, Classroom in a book."

Hope this helps.

Dear Colin,
You asked my expert opinion about your layer work. I think this photo is the work of an expert in his own right. I would change nothing in it as it conveys exactly what you wanted to express. In fact, I added it to my favorites.
Best regards,
Rafi
