Peter yes the errosion is the main thing at work here. I have been going there for 8 years and see changes . There was some erruption originally as some of the badlands are above average ground level. You can see this effect as you approach it, most of the "high country" is however on the rim or edges of the badlands. A very intersting place to visit and photograph
