Paul, this is incredible! I don't know what new I can add to the 71 comments I see have been made before my arrival (and I'm so sorry it has taken me this long to do so). This reminds me of a favorite drawing I have hung in my house of three women. I love everything about this, from the excellent technical aspects to the subject and mood. Congratulations on the awards ---- I'm really glad to see them on this. Bravo!!! Antonia

Well Roger.. I knew that your critique was great :)..and I guess I was not the only one since it was selected as the Featured Critique... still not sure why the person giving the critique does not get the credit instead of the receiver..hopefully they will change that in the next upgrade, at least give the award to both... thanks again for your insightful comments.

Thanks for the detailed reply, Paul. Seeing that it was a quick "grab" shot this is exceptionally good, and a lot of what I said is irrelevant. Interesting that the tiles should show that distinctive pattern, though... a case of life imitating art (the real thing looking like PS!).

  0

Paul's Photos Paul's Photos   {K:35235} 7/6/2005
Thanks for the comment Roger.. very detailed :) well, lets see if I can answer your questions... I did not sharpen the image but I did not change the DPI so maybe that is what you see...

As to the focus, I did not change anything to the image. The background is very far and more distant than it looks in the image and I was only focused on the women... so that is why the background is so blurry.

The blurry look in the lower left and right corners is actually the pavement..the pavement changes style/pattern and for some reason it shows up that way in the image. I did crop a bit from the bottom which showed a concrete part of the pavement which I thought was distracting. But I did not do any ps work to this area.

Basically, the only PS work was to change it to b&w, lowering the brightness and then adjusting the contrast. I also cropped the top and bottom of the image. I took the image very fast and did not have a lot of time to set it up. The amish do not like their pictures taken so I was trying to do it fast so I would not offend them...

Roger Williams Roger Williams   {K:86139} 7/6/2005
Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique I like it a lot, but I see a few things that slightly detract from the appeal (for me) and at least one that puzzles me. Nice strong contrast, with just the right suggestion of detail in the almost-blown highlights and the almost-solid shadows. Right on the limits! But I think I see the edge effects of over-sharpening. Perhaps you didn't remember to set dpi to 72? (300dpi and Usefilm will downsize your image AND boost the sharpening!). Also, I think you might have tried to throw the distant scene even further out of focus. I don't know if that was possible, of course, but as it is, it's a bit too insistent for a mere background. I think I see why you included more foreground than usual... to get a sense of space into the picture to balance the fact that the ladies appear rather scrunched up against the railings (and for that matter against the view behond them). But what is that blurring and area of low contrast in the lower L and R corners? Deliberate PS work? Despite the above I really DO like it. And thanks for your encouraging comments, Paul.

What a wonderful photo, Paul! This is classic and beautifully composed - I love the contrasts of the three women in their simple garb, sitting on such ornate benches! Makes you wonder what they're thinking and talking about as they looking out over these palatial and manicured gardens, so different from their unadorned lifestyle! Really outstanding!

This is really where the talented person can catch and shoot things that are fairly routine, things we pass by every day or come across, choosing monochrome can set overall tone to an B&W art photography. Beside the fabulous colour works the lately B&W has a "blend" taste and great work. Saeed

Hello Paul, it's good to finally see some new work from you again. As always this picture is lovely.
The scene on the picture is excellent for the Henri project, a wonderfull street shot. The composition is wonderfull, and i like it that you see them from behind with a wonderfull background, the fountains are wonderfull. The blurry background is excellent, and looks nice with the main subject, the three people. I think this picture works so well for me becose you look with the view those three have to. Excellent job!

Greets,
Lex.
