Its a very good and high quality lens - no question. I believe its better than the Sigma and the Tamron in build quality, Focal Length, and has an USM Ring Type focus system. Probably similar in optical quality (that's what I heard, but found no comparisons yet). It should really get an L, but its an EF-S - made for non-pro bodies, so I gather Canon don't want to aim it at a market its not designed for.
If you want the best available in this focal range - its a good choice, and I am not sorry I spent the extra couple of hundred...
