About This is my grain bins here on the farm. Working with IR yesterday as the clouds were pretty good. The old building on the left is a corn crib used when corn was picked in the ear and stored in that building until it was shelled when it was dry. Exposure was about 1/5 sec f 16

Ok Don, that makes sense...I was trying to figure it out as if it were taken in the morning...I guess I need to practice my time of day guessing!

Old barns and buildings are great subjects, nice choice.

That's a real fascinating shot Don. It's got all the sharpness I like in a B/w shot. I'm not conversant with I/R photography at all. The only time I've been any where near it was back in the early 60's when I buddy of mine experimented with it. I/R film and a thick red filter which would only allow you to see the sun through it. He claimed I/R would cut through thin clothing. Sure enough, he took a group shot of us lads. He was wearing thin white jeans and when processed (at a specialised lab) he was trouserless, knobbly knees and all. One of those memories that stick.

Keseph, we are looking almost straight north. It was 3:32 in the afternoon. The shadows would go to the right side as the sun got lower. Thanks again Keseph you input is most appreciated. Don.

Don, hindsight is always 20/20, but apparently I should have just bought used cameras all along. Never damaged the old F1.

Looking at the light in this shot, are we looking towards the south west? Just trying to figure out where the shadows would be later in the day, as mentioned in an earlier comment.

Keseph, you have a very good eye and have found the things that are wrong with th is picture. I did not spend much time with this image and it shows. It is the little things that you pointed out the can hurt a picture. Glad that you got me back on track and I will try and critic my own work more before posting it. Thanks a bunch. Sounds like you have had a lot of trouble keeping cameras out of trouble. Lets see more of your work in the future. Don.

"critique only"

My apologies, Don. I'm not really qualified to be making critical observations...

...I think it would be better without the lines (power?) in the center background, but of course, there is no way around that.

There appears to be a round object in the lower left corner, and my eye eventually pauses there.

I too would have darkened it, which would be a mistake.

Having said that, this is a top notch shot. Maybe being born in the mid-west gives me a biased view.

Hi Tom, Yes I use the Hoya R72 IR filter. The only place that I have found it is through Robin Kanta in California. Thanks Tom. Don.

great sky, the clouds look beautifull. You really get the feeling of an amazing day. What IR filter/size do you use with your D70?

Thanks Paul, yes maybe a little later in the day would have made the light better. I have been experimenting with the IR filter and have found that it works best with bright sun. Thanks for your great comments. Don.

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique Don,
It's funny how every time there is a critique only post no one ever does that. Anyway, I think the composition is nice and the fact that you can see all the detail inside the corn crib is great. If this was my shot the crib would probably be really dark and contrasty (bad). The only critique I have is probably the fact that another time of day would have probably been better or even a more overcast day would have turned out better. It seemed the day was really bright or maybe it is the IR effect. Also, possibly not using IR would have been a better choice because the grass just looks really burnt and too bright. Just some things to think about. I'm no expert myself.

Very nice composition, Don. I like the way you have the road winding out thru the bins to the horizon. I like the IR on this. But you know I always like B&W :-) The clouds were excellent here yesterday. I hope you took some shots in color also. I went out and shot a few but I have no picturesque grain bins in my backyard :-( Best wishes, Larry
