About I have seen this optical effect only in other peoples photos, and only from an airplane looking downward into clouds. It has other names, but 'glory' is probably most well known.
I took this photo the same afternoon as the hippie on the rock photo and from the same location.
I went back over to grab something out of my camera bag and there it was..... so cool. Just the tiny amount of haze in the air cause this. The sun is directly behind me, and you can see my shadow leading into the center of the image. Nothing artistic about the shot, but I wanted to share this wonderful mountain surprise.
This topped off a magical day for my brother and I.

Thanks Roger. It was something really neat to see for the first time..... something I never would have expected to see standing on the ground.... firured it was an airplane only sight.
Computer is too small for a Photoshop program. All I can do now is use a freebie download called IrfanView to manipulate the photo. It's pretty good considering the price. :)
Thanks for the comments, Roger.
As you have noticed, my interests are varied, and unlike you, it's a rare day when a human form is in my photos......... I'll leave that to you.

yeah cool as.. all rainbows are complete circles but mostly seen when we are earthbound and hence we can only see the bit that's in the sky.. when we "get up into the sky' (hey now there's a mountain photography book title or series!) tho as you have done here, or as you say seen from an aeroplane then yep you get the full circle... Personally I reckon if you tweaked the trast a bit you would have a real winner... this could be the front cover of a self help book or a management training book or some other power of one, power of the human spirit thing, you know what I mean?? I reckon its a ripper... nice portfolio too by the way

This is interesting, I've never seen this before either. Thanks!

Thanks Brenda. The picture is more of a "look what I seen" , than a photo worth framing....... Even with a good backdrop, a photo like this has pretty limited use. I figured most people had never seen one, and would enjoy seeing this unusual effect. That day, my brother and I certainly did. The photo came out looking almost exactly what we saw with our eyes.
I have been exploring, camping, and hiking around in the hills since I got my drivers licence in '74. The photo bug grabbed me in '82 or so, and in the many thousands of miles of driving, camping and hiking, I had never seen this before........ It's just kinda' rare and cool thing to see.... I just felt like sharing it.

This is definately a play of light, love the mistiness and the shadows from the clouds on the mountains and of course the "rainbow effect" is just too cool!!! (are you sure you didn't use a circular rainbow filter for this? ;)) If you were to crop about a 3/4 of an inch off the bottom, your shadow would be less obvious. A beautiful picturesque scene you have captured here! :)
