About Another take on the dried tulip petal.

Again, honest advice and criticism wanted. I'm trying to learn and improve.

Without a border it is hard to tell, but I think you centered this one a little bit dead in the middle. Without the border the clean abstraction makes for a really entergetic diagonal shape - I'd just hate to see it stopped cold when you print and frame it in the middle. I'd suggest placing the shadow in the lower left and definitely giving it a lot of negative space to the right and top. (rule of thirds?)

OK honest opinion coming here, I really prefer "borderless tulip petal II" to this one. I think you are lacking some DOF here. I love the colors here, but with the DOF being this shallow, the bottom of the petal is a blur, and it really doesn't "speak" to me like number II did.

Nice shot! I see what you mean, Lily. I used a fairly soft brush to erase part of the shadow because, due to my ineptness, part of that shadow was cut by the frame :(

Thanks for the tip, great advice!

At the base of the flower there's a darkish triangle like shape which I assume is a shadow and also part of leftover background. I just meant for that area to gradually fade into the white background instead of having hard edges. I am attaching my flower picture (which still has problems and not the best example) to show you what I mean. I am trying to learn how to shoot these right myself. Best wishes, Lily. :-)

That's got to rank pretty close to "the dog is eating my homework" as an excuse, Danny.

You can always come back later and rip some more hole in the pic, you'll be very welcome :)

Lily,

Can you help me understand what you mean by "shadow transition". I'm not familiar with the term, and I don't really know what you mean.

Thanks!

I'm going with the consensus here Angelo and think it does need more DOF. The minimalism worls very well but the lack of DOF has created a half blurred half sharp image with too much of a sharp line to define the boundary. You can get away with large areas of out of focus with this type of shot but only when the transition is gradual - unfortunately not the case here. Nice idea though and great colours

Love the concept here Angelo and the creativity as well..very nice, you've already heard about the focus so I won't repeat that, but the back portion of the petal is awesome...love the colors, the focus, the angle, and the presentation is wonderful as well..:):)Linda

Very nice try Angelo,
The only thing I am not sure about is the DOF, why not bringing it all into focus, it has a wonderful texture,
Beside that, it is just fine,
Cheers,

I like the upper half very much (excellent), but not so sure about the darker, blurred bottom (too much blur?). Can you make the shadow transition to bg more smoothly?

Here, I see that you deliberately choose to remove the "border" to bring more of the white background into the picture, as it were. Very effective. But I am sure most people's instinct would have been to add a frame, even a minimalist frame, just to mark out the area of the photograph. Your choice is much better.

Another great one!!! But I agree with Carolyn on the DOF issue... this one needs more!! 'Hitting' it with more light should enable you to increase the aperture... and give you a bit more DOF and transluscentness... The texture in the petal is great and the 'floating' in mid-air feel is wonderful... well done!! Can't wait with what you'll come up next.... ;-D!!!

I like the borderless petal but this one could definitely use more depth of field and maybe a different angle. The color and translucence are still excellent. I would focus more on the front of the flower. Still, very beautiful!
