Hi Melanie, beautiful photo and hair. People have to remember that your son is half black so a dreadlock is more than natural In Brazil where 45% of the population is black and mixed the dreads are associated with black consciousness. Political correct. Kisses Marta

"Therefore nobody wanted to insult you by bringing up the fact that your wonderful capture included poverty? You should conceder it a complement that no one mentioned it?"
I highly doubt she would be insulted - lol. For one thing, there really is no connection to hairstyles representing certain socio-economic classes, esp. not in the U.S. If anything, there tends to be more artistic and philosophical individuals here who wear this particular style. But I've never been able to judge people based on how they wear their hair :)
Also, as a photographer we don't always want to capture the rich, elite lives. I have several photographs that are more poverty-related and that's the exact message I was getting across, so it wouldn't be an insult if someone associated that "feel" to them. Although that is clearly not Melanie's intention in this beautiful head shot. There really isn't much room for interpretation in a tight photo like this. It's a head shot, I don't see a message of any sorts coming across in this. I guess that's part of the art though - everyone has their right to judge the image based on their past experiences.
Great contrast to the photo and direct light on your son's face without washing him out. Good job!

I'm not playing any cards, nor am I a rastafarian. I only mentioned it because I know that is one of the reasons rastafarians wear their hair in dread locks I don't claim those same beliefs.
Like I said, I have no other reasons for styling my son's hair that way other than liking the way it looks and not having to fight with him daily to comb his hair.

Mel,
I didn?t mean any malice regarding my comments whatsoever!
Before you play the religious card, I must warn you, I am well versed in the Biblical version of Samson! Not to mention Jesus was a Nazarene? In, which they didn?t believe in the cutting of hair?

Yeah, I'm not trying to debate anything. I was just throwing a few facts out there.
As for the smell... dunno who's hair you've been smelling, but I wash my son's hair regulary and it smells great!
Whoever said you can't wash dread locks is just plain wrong.

It's not so much that no one mentioned it, it's more that MOST people don't realize that they are dreads. They think they are braids and that he is a girl because his hair is long.
While I'm sure there are parts of Jamaica where dreads are linked with poverty... as well as other places... not all people, including Jamaicans, associate dreads with poverty. Dreads actually originated in Jamaica as a sort of rebellion against the Euro-centricism that was forced on them. Also, many rastafarians wear dread locks for religious reasons. Many Rastafarians believe that like Samson, their hair is their strength and also their weakness if it is cut off.
As for most of us here in the states.... LOL... it is nothing more than a hairstyle. It is a style that I always really liked and decided to do my son's hair that way because A) I liked it and B) it was easier than fighting with him every day for 30+ minutes to comb his hair! People here do not equate dreads with poverty, it's just another hairstyle!

Melanie,
I?m quite sure everyone noticed the dreadlocks, but no one wanted to mention it. It?s a well-known fact that they don?t wash them, or brush them. I have been to Jamaica 2 times and dreadlocks are a sign of poverty.
Therefore nobody wanted to insult you by bringing up the fact that your wonderful capture included poverty? You should conceder it a complement that no one mentioned it?
My Best,
Martin

Thank you, Magnus! You are one of the few people that actually recognize his hairstyle straight off.
Most people think he's a girl, he doesn't brush his hair, he doesn't wash his hair, his hair is in braids.... you get the idea! LOL Doesn't anyone know what dread locks are anymore??
