Thank you all so very much for your comments and your expressions of sensitivity ) Just to let you know, I never just walk in to a child's photo session with camera in hand. I find that it works well to gab for a while, suck my thumb to make them laugh. Getting down to their eye level is very important as well. They can easily sense an adult's nervousness or discomfort. Kids are precious and profoundly communicative when we leave our adult mind at their doorway. B;o)
