About This is a young hummingbird. Usually it is the adult males with their brightly colored throats that are shown, but I thought the colors of this little lady were so delicate and soft that there was tremendous beauty here.

I just loved taking these shots of this young hummer. She is giving the male guarding the feeder fits. He has been able to keep all other contenders away from the feeder till this young one, with brashness and speed and daring challenges him continually. I took more than 60 shots in less than 45 minutes of this little one and the male. Just wonderful beauty.

I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks for all that info, David. I don't really know how to decrease the flash speed on my Canon 20d- I sure want to figure it out so I can take shots like this one, though. You have the best bird shots on this site- I don't know why they have not received any awards so far. Your work is incredible!

Really nothing done in software, a very little bit of increase in color saturation. The shadow is cast by the flash on the siding of my house. This is by a feeder hanging in front of my picture window. I set the tripod of by the feeder and take pictures with the remote from my couch. Not too rough. . .

:) :) :) :) :)

Thanks,

Dave

Wow, David! This is amazing! Great shot of the hummer, and the background is so cool! Did you do that in PS? Love the shadow, too! Allover wonderful shot!

Thanks Kay,

I don't know what kind of camera you have, but faster shutter speed won't usually work as you need flash for the reduced lighting and for my camera anyway the fastest synchronization between flash and shutter is 1/500 sec. If however you reduce the duration of the flash, it has the same effect as shortening the shutter opening time. I have some others that the wings are almost stopped, just by reducing the flash to 1/8th or 1/16th power and with a far slower shutter speed than you would think.

Again thanks for your comments,

Dave

Incredible! You did a great job on this one. They are hard to catch! Mine always end up with blurry wings- your lighting is very nice too. Did you use a flash? I think you may have had a faster shutter speed than 1/250 too- maybe? Thanks for sharing!
