Ciao, Simone -
The spirit house is a dwelling place for the spirits of the land. It is an animist tradition, pre-Buddhist in origin. Small offerings are left for the spirits in the hope that the spirits will be happy to have people live or work on the land. You find these all over Thailand, and similar traditions elsewhere in South-East Asia (in Bali, for instance).
Thank you for asking a very sensible question! You can find more photographs of spirit houses in one of my portfolios and there are others on usefilm.com, too.
Sorry I am unable to express this in any other language than English. I hope you understand. (In Thai language spirit houses are called 'Phra phoo me jow tee' but I guess that's not very useful for you...)
Best wishes
Len
