This sounds like there was an extra step between original and digital.

I'm not sure what you mean by scan directly to digital. I did scan the photo directly into my CS2 program. Is that what you mean? Angela

Hi Angela-
Try scanning the original directly to digital. Trying to retain as much shadow detail as possible during that first stage may help.
Try using your scratch remover tool on the scratches and other artifacts.
CD are not so immortal, they are vulnerable to environmentally caused damage. Consider making backup disks. In ten years there will surely be vastly improved archiving media, so you can easily back it all up again. There is a lot written about archiving CDs and about their vulnerabilities. Search some keyword strings [CD damage heat UV] [CD archiving] etc.

Angela don't know what programme you have, but in CS2 there is a part where you can adjust the exposure, which I tried, also in filters I have one that removes colour cast. Some healing tool/clone, and the dodge and burn, which is not always successful and becomes cloudy. The problem with trying to quickly work on a very small image once up to a decent size it can look awful It also depends on if you want to print or have on screen. I have found with some stuff I have done, what looks good on screen is not okay for printing. If anything I have said helps you to adjust it again I'm glad, as I said I know how it is with precious photos that you don't want to lose and try to keep at their best. Margaret

Don't be so h ard, on my monitor it really looked nice. I will have to say though, I went into school tonight nad pulled up this picture and the fixes and a couple of them with the dodging on the neck looked cloudy on that monitor. Angela

Hi Angela, I must be having big problems with my graphics card settings/monitor, but to me the latter treatments make your Mum look like something resembling a burn victim I regret to say...all plasticy and yucky, especially lower face and arms. I must say I liked Susie O'Connor's treatment best! Kind regards,
Anthony

Congrats Angela, it's a photo worthy of a bit of thought for us. Margaret I can see the smile immediately here so well done, I suppose a slight dodge would be helpful next step. Thanks for the critique I've learnt something.

Angela congrats on front page, took the pic to see if I could find time to have a play. I think both of your shots have come out well. The colour is a little yellowy/orangey, such a shamewhen precious shots are fading. But you can still see yu Mum's lovely smile. Seewhat youthink of my playing about, after I had dne the work on it I then did a BW of it Margaret

I don't mind at all Susie. I can see the differencd too. I'm going to see if I can do that screen thing on CS2. Hopefully it's not too different than you explained it. Angela

Screen: make a selection around the area that is too dark. Control J to make a layer of this selection. Change the blending mode to "screen". It will lighten up the area considerably. If it's too much you can lower the opacity until it looks right. If an image is too light you can do the same thing and change the blend mode to "multiply". It's pretty amazing what this tool can do. Let me know if my instructions are confusing. I'm using Photoshop Elements 3. I quickly did a screen on this one (hope you don't mind) it's pretty rough but you get the idea. I lassoed your mom and the part of you that was dark. Hope it comes through okay. Regards, Susie

I tried very hard, especially around her chin, to bring it out with dodge tool. I don't know many other tricks but this one just made it foggy/light. I didn't like it. I don't knwo waht screen is? Angela

I'm torn between the 2. I just love the mood of this photo...timeless. Makes me think of carefree childhood days. Did you try to screen or dodge your moms face to bring it out a bit more? She looks beautiful, it would be nice to see more of her.

I have put all my dad's slides (late 50's, 60's & 70's) to cds a few years ago. I wish I had more knowledge then, before I went about it, but they didn't turn out too bad. I have a scanner (not that great) that is able to scan slides. I would scan them right into ps and reworked them from there. I didn't get prints made, yet, that I recall, but the images themselves look okay. Having them on cd was my main goal, as a lot of them were yellowing, fading or generally deteriorating and it would be a shame to lose that part of history! I wish now that I had kept an original scan on cd, too...that way as my ps skills grow, I would be able to rework them as I go! Good luck, Angela, it's worth the time!

Excellent, Angela! Though, maybe with just a tad of the yellow taken out, the original is fantastic! I think I need to understand....this is a slide? and you brought it somewhere to have it made into a photo? Then scanning the photo? Or are you scanning a slide?

I like both the B&W and the original version. I like how the colors have taken a yellow/pinkish cast in the original, sign of its age.
This is superbly tender and touching. Brings me to my own 60s.
