I've had variable success with TC's, and my 2x Canon TC stays in the bag. I wouldn't use one made by a different manufacturer than your lens, and I would probably go no longer than 1.4x. There is a review of the Canon TC's on photo.net, comparing the 1.4 to the 2.0.

This image looks upside down to me, but I guess my view is different, being so far north of the equator.
