Petal,
It's not a pine cone. It is the remains of a seed pod from some kind of weed I don't know the name of. It is quite small (1" dia) and I was holding it in my hand. You can see the blurred colour of my hand in the lower left.

Actually, it's not a pine cone! It is about 1" in diameter and is the remains of a seed pod from some unknown (to me) kind of weed.
