What wonderful tones on these majestic geese against the blue sky background. Incredible shot.

Thanks Eb! I really didn't do much processing here, other than sharpened them a bit. The shutter speed was normal, I got a slight blur on one, but thanks for the advice, I shall try it in shutter mode next time. I think that's a great idea!

Eb Mueller Eb Mueller   {K:24960} 12/1/2005
Lots of discussion on this one, Ina! The geese are like wallpaper which is allowed to run out of the frame. Besides you could clone a few if so inclined. I find it takes a surprisingly high shutter speed to fully stop wing motion. Your geese are very beautiful against a clear sky.

Hi Riny, sorry to hear that you're disappointed, but please don't take your pictures away! I've been on many sites, and all have their pluses and minuses, none is perfect! I find this the best in terms of community and exchange, and I really think the best recognition is the friends and other people who write you comments. I do hope you come back, I very much enjoyed viewing your pictures and reading your comments! Warm regards, Ina

I know, any good photographers left and I have been thinking for sometimes
to also leave. Yes, the matter about the moderators is very annoying they
do do things the right way. I have seen many pictures unjustly awarded and
some really nice and good photos ignored. I also believe that it is partly
something moved by jealousy but I'm sure that they are also impartial and
that they favorite the work of their friends.Another annoying thing is that
UF has been promising changes for some time now and they seem to never
happen. In a moment of great disappointment I have decided to take down all
my photos and leave/ I tried this begore, not long ago and I went back to
posting. This time I will stay away for a very long time, possibly for good.
I am sure that it won't be quite a surprise for you.

Sending all my best regards to you.

Riny

Thanks Elisa! The geese in flight are very easy to catch if you spot them from a distance and they're coming towards you.
I'm sure Kathy and Susie will have a great success!

Hi Ina! I just thought of Kathy and Susie, this being their BIG day, and then found this dedication! So thoughtful and kind of you; fits so well as they are flying towards new adventures! I just love scenes like this, but never had the luck to capture something as great as this! I have to admit that I prefer the crop Walter did. Nonetheless - a very beautiful shot, and a great gesture! *hugs*

Wow, Ina!!! I'm blown away! What a wonderful surprise it was to scroll down and see this shot and this title! Like Susie, I'm sorry that it took me so long to see this. I almost went to bed without checking out images at all. I'm sure glad that I didn't!
As Susie said, we think we are ready...or as ready as we'll ever be anyway. For me this is deja vu. I did this for 14 years before we closed years ago. But it still feels new and I'm a little nervous. Also looking forward to seeing a lot of old friends.
Thank you so much for all your support, Ina. You are truly a good friend!
Kathy

According to the picture orientation, they're headed South-West :) Just kidding! Thanks for stopping by, Gary! They were just flying around the Botanical Garden on the edge of Lake Ontario. They spend all winter here. There's a place called Coots Paradise, probably their habitat.

Ina I'm sorry it took me so long to see this...it brought tears to my eyes!
I never used to understand how someone could form a friendship with people online...I certainly am understanding that now! You are a good friend to us both. I can't wait for Kathy to see this. I know she'll love it too.
6AM tomorrow...! This cafe has been in our family and this community for so long that the locals are really excited for the re-opening. (They weren't all that happy when we closed and catered only for the last 5 years)
We had a local TV station out today for an interview and the local paper will be out tomorrow. So it's been pretty intense for the last few days.
We're trying to come up with something to post for you guys...give us a few days!
This is beautiful, of course I love your original crop and all the alternatives are wonderful too. That's the great thing about this website.
Thanks again dear Ina. This is truly apprecicated. (Oh btw, Mom is so much better and will be working with us 2 days a week! Hallelujah!)

Thanks Andrzej, It was an unplanned shot, we went to feed the chickadees, but these happened to fly over. I was surprised it didn't turn out as blurry as most of my other flight shots do, handheld :)

Ina, it's a model shot touching perfection of the arts, it's as simple composition as it could be and as good as can impress. Don't worry about crop issue, it's not the major one - me (myself) very often like to show the continuity of the scene when there is no reason to abstract it. Very impressed, n.j

Hi Neal, I'm not sure anymore about my crop, but that's the beauty of UF - I really like the fast input one gets! And I like your interpretation :) Thanks for your valuable comment and input! Best regards, Ina

  0

Neal Nye   {K:15827} 12/1/2005
There is no end of ways to do this differently but I believe your first intincts are always the best. And your original version is the best. The partly visible bird in the corner implies that there are many more of them and connects this limited view to the greater world. And you're right about the curve too. This is very well done.

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 12/1/2005
Nice to hear from you Ann (so to speak :) - sorry that you still have laryngitis, I thought that went away by now. You're so kind with your comments, always like to read you. I fancy the square crop, and it could have worked with six birds - but hey! that's the beauty of UF - other people see what you don't. I really appreciate everybody's input, and your comments, as always. Take care, and lots of warm drinks!

A lovley dedication for Kathy and Susie Ina. I hope their business takes off as well as these birds did. Beautiful colours and a wonderful symbolisation in this image. You are so thoughtful. I'm thinking they haven't been here to see because they are so busy. That's OK cause I'm sure they are picking up all your positive vibes and blessings.

As for the crop issue....I actually like both but I prefer the landscape orientation in your post - your second one. I like the different positions of the wings and it still has a lovely curve to it.

I still have the laryngitis too. Sure is taking me ages to shake this but I'm getting better.

Cheers - Ann :)

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 11/30/2005
Thanks Steve, I guess Walter's suggestion of cutting the first bird out (see above) is killing two birds with one shot (no pun intended) - it's a square and it gets rid of the clipped bird, too. I guess I got stuck to number 7, and missed the compo! Thanks for doing the alternate crop, I really appreciate your input!

  0

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 11/30/2005
Thanks Walter, I clipped that bird in camera :-( I guess I could have cut it out!

I hate to disagree with you, Ina, but I think your alternative shot is great. If you should decide that keeping things square isn't that important, you might consider the following crop:

Walter Scarella Walter Scarella   {K:19671} 11/30/2005
This is a very beautiful capture Ina, but with your permission I suggest you this composition without the part of the bird on the top of the right corner. In any case you made a very great work! My best congratulations.....Regards....Walter

Hi Aram, nice to hear from you! I'm happy you like the feeling of freedom - birds in flight are not my usual subject, I don't have a fast lens. But occasionally, I get a lucky shot or two :)

  0

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 11/30/2005
Hi Steve, thanks for the comment. I clipped the wings of the last goose (out of the camera). If I crop the blue lower left corner - to still keep it square, I would also clip the wing of the first bird, or else it becomes an odd vertical format. But I have a horizontal image, that might be better, but the curve is not as interesting, I think. See below:

Beyond the precision and technical prowess let me admire the fantasia and imagination throughout the feeling of nostalgic freedom and grace, hence impregnated of the constraint to leave in an interminable effort. Bravissimo, Dear Ina!

Steve Aronoff Steve Aronoff   {K:18393} 11/30/2005
Terrific photo, Ina, as everyone has said. Have you considered cropping off the left edge so that the geese fill the diagonal?

  0

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 11/30/2005
Thanks Daniel - they're supposed to migrate South, but they're here all winter. Genetically they're programmed to train for the long flights, and they still do it, even though they're going short distances.

Thanks Endre, the Canada geese stay here all winter, bracing the cold weather - they live in the city, and are as usual as sparrows. Many times they fly right over my balcony. Some fly South in winter, but most got used to being fed by people. You can get very close to them in any park.
