Charlie, I appreciate your comments. The upload is the entire format, as most platinum prints are not cropped. I do not think images need to be big to be good. the detail present within the door and bricks is the focus. I need no distractions on the steps. A good thumbnail will get your attention. As the thumbnail of this image is soft and not representative. Still it got your attention. Even with shooting an 8x10 camera, my image is never larger than 8x10.
I think it is very easy to see the textures and tone scales in the image as presented. This photo was taken in 1991, and kept in small scan as loading times in those days were very slow.
As with much travel photography, the opportunity to move an 8x10 camera is limited as compared to miniature cameras or digital. One shot is normally what I take. Good or bad.
Appreciate your comments, but feel totally comfortable with size and presentation here. I really wouldn't change anything.
Cordially,
Gary www.garyauerbach.com www.WeWalkinBeauty.com

dear gary, with a large format camera you should have uploaded the max format here. it is hard to judge the technical quality in such a small picture. the subject is great but what i am issing is some distinct light to give the scene some effect. alternatively, as we hardly can switch on the sun, a strong attraction could have been an object of strong contrast or unsual form placed on the steps, hung to the door or leaned in the corner. possibly a slight change of the camera position to either side could also have added some interest and attraction. the way it is, this looks rather documentary and would invite me to get closer for a number of close-ups. have another go once you burden yourself with the tripod again! saludos cordiales charlie.f.kohn@sixpence-pictures.com // photography // design // madrid

Alison,
Thank you again for your thoughts and comments. Harrison Begay is one of the most famous of indian artists. He works in watercolor.
Tell me how you output your photographs? It is a chief issue I have in the photography community. I am often getting in strong discussions about digital....and even silver based printmaking.

The lighting is wonderful and adds beautiful drama to this portrait, which has a very intimate feel to it. You have defenitely captured what seems like the artists personality. I have been reading some of the stories that go along with your Native American portraits, and they are wonderful, I particularily liked Harrison Begay, he had quite a life. Alison

Thank you Alison for your considerations regarding my work. One reason I put my entire book online is because many people cannot afford to buy either a hard or soft cover, and with it online, all can read it. I hope you might take advantage of this, and read some of the text, which I find at times, inspiring. Best wishes again or the holidays. Respectfully, Gary www.WeWalkinBeauty.com www.garyauerbach.com

Alison, thank you for your comments. I made a series of photogravure's (etched copper plates that are used in printing) for a portfolio series visible on my website under 'purchase' that were made in Ashuelot NH...up the road from Stamford on the Amtrak. Loot at purchase/we walk in beauty. This image is one of them.
Lovely train rider, the Vermonter' that is. Best wishes during the holidays... Gary www.WeWalkinBeauty.com www.garyauerbach.com

I don't know a lot about Platinum photography but I do know it takes a long time and is quite exspensive to do. This one is gorgeous, it has the feeling of an old time photo. I love his proud stance and the wonderful lines and depth of the background. Alison

Hi Gary, I like your photograph very much, chosen place of composition shows evidence of a carefully study also the lighting flow between the elements had easy peaceful but mystery to it. Personally seeing overall it frames dynamics based of the confident posture and light effect to it. That’s your magic my friend:) Harry
