Hi Ron, thanks for your comments, much appreciated! It was fun to do (but cold, waiting 30 minutes for the exposure to be over with) I'd never tried it before, as we have too much ambient light to make it work where I live, and the digital camera isn't exactly the right tool for such long exposures, but nonetheless I was quite impressed by the quality (I expected much more noise) Next time, I'll take a film camera, and a very low sensitieve film, and go for the really long exposures. That would be fun to try!
Cheers,
Hugo

Looks like a fun idea that we can all try at home. The results may not be as pictured here but fun nevertheless. Well done.

Your welcome Hugo. Its a bit hard to tell at these sizes if there's a noise reduction, but some of the fainter star trails seem to have been lost in the latest image so it probably needs more work. Cheers Bruce

Hey! Now there's an idea! Why didn't I think of that? Layer blending modes in Photoshop! Just a quick and dirty trial using a black layer as overlay, with a mask of the sky seems to (at least) come closer to a noiseless image. (see attached) Thanks for the tip, excellent idea! Much appreciated!
Cheers,
Hugo

I don't know that it would work here, but friends who take star shots through telescopes take a shot under the same conditions with the lens cap on and then subtract that from the image to remove some of the noise. Just a thought.

Hi Bruce, thanks for your comment and thoughts. Interesting thought! Trying to remember... Both nights, it was about 20F, I believe, or close to it, not much difference, and I doubt such small differences would affect the amount of noise too much. I always understood the amount of noise also increases with longer exposures, which makes sence. Never gave the influence of temperature a second thought, but that alsoseems plausible.
Cheers,
Hugo

I like the composition of both of these Hugo. Was the night warmer when you did the 1 hour one? I believe higher temperatures will cause more noise.

Hi Hugo
Good to see you've been enjoying yourself in WA...fascinating part of the world esp. the NP.

Hi Max, Glad to be back too! In reply to your comment, it was completely wind still that night, and I fully agree that I should've placed the North star somewhere visible in the composition. I thought about it, but I couldn't locate it, so I made an estimate, and just missed the right point. I took a second shot the next night with the North Star in view, but exposed for 1 hour, and that resulted in an unacceptable level of digital noise.
Thanks alot for your very useful comment! (duely marked it as such; who knows what happens next...:)
Cheers,
Hugo

Happy to see you back!!! Fortunately there was no wind that night ;) I like the immobility of the trees in comparison of the great dynamism of the stars in the sky, it would have been wonderful if you had put the North Star in the upper right corner! I’m kidding, it’s a perfect dark sky shot :) Bye, Max

Hi Hugo, now I know why you are not so present in the site. With these kind of photos you need so loooooong time that you can't spend anymore time on the web :) Excellent the effect of the stars. I saw something similar in Kenna Exhibition and I though it was made with longer exposure (hours and hours). Just 30 minutes.... not bad, now I try .... see you in the next 30 minutes :) Bye

Am eagerly looking forward to more of your work.

Hi Hugo,
30 minutes! WHEW! So the trees really came out nice, although I expected that the trees were moving in the wind. anyway, this one has a great contrast between the star spangled sky and the rock solid trees. The fisheye really adds to the scene here.
welcome back, and hopefully we see constant examples of your great work.
best wishes, Thilo

Hi John, with a 30 minutes exposure, you don't need a very bright lamp. This one was used to illuminate a road sign, so it was bright enoug....:)
Thanks for your comment,

Hi P.J. First of all, a very merry christmas and the best wishes for 2006 to you too!.
It saddens me to read about your decision. I'll definately miss you, both as a photographer as well as a commenter. Eventhough I do think the new site is an improvement, as well as I realise "we" don't own UF, so we have only limited influence, I respect your opinion... Anyways, I hope you change your mind...:)
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Gayle, We went to WA in September - October this year, and ventured out from Seattle to a few national parks. Beautiful area, and we still had some luck with the weather, too!
They are indeed star trails. I wanted to see the level of noise the D2x generates with a very long exposure (this one is 30 minutes, and I think the level of noise is still quite acceptable; a 1 hr. exposure resulted in an image beyond repair. (see attached)
I rather like the new UF style, and I believe it'll be awesome when the bugs and glitches are resolved... I guess I'm one of the few who are still pleased...:)
Thanks for your comment.
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Pat, It's good to be back. Life has been horribly busy.... Thanks for your comment. As to the camera settings, the exact settings used were:
100 ASA f/8 30 minutes (nothing more than >5 minutes on usefilm)
Need a thick coat, and a lot of patience for this one...:)
Good to hear from you!
Cheers,
