Butterflies are HARD! You did well to capture this one. Nice contrasting colours and textures all around it, too. The slight softness may have been camera shake because of a slow shutter speed... I get a lot of that these days.

thank you, dave! he was hard to catch - he flew around a lot, and hardly ever opened to see the gorgeous blues inside. i have a LOT of pix of his brown outside wings. ;)

thanks, doyle! yes, my camera isn't that great. i can't wait for my d80 to come in! whoo!! but you're right - it was in february, in a misty conservatory - hard to get great photos there. i don't use photoshop (yet?)...i just can't bring myself to play with the photos that way yet.

i appreciate your GREAT comments and advice. thank you!

Nicely done Jessie:
Good, strong diagonal composition with lovely colors contrasting from butterfly to BG..... the water looks smooth as silk and you can almost feel the texture of the wet rock and the green plants make a nice, minimal accent. As for tips to improve this . . . I think the focus could stand to be a bit sharper . . . though the unsharp mask in PS might have handled that for you . . . and the butterfly seems a bit bright suggesting a little too much exposure . . . though just a tad.
Seeing the camera you're using, I'd suggest a slightly faster shutter speed . . . to drop the exposure a tad . . . the water would become much sharper but you don't need to worry about DOF since the butterfly is practically on the BG with this POV and the silky water, while nice, is not the point of this shot.
I particularly like the colors in this shot since mother nature has nicely conspired with you to have that beautiful blue butterfly stand out! I think this is a really good shot Jessie! :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~~
