You have such a good eye for the patterns and textures in things!
Emgy, the big shadow came from having a slaved flash directly on the ground about 25' behind the figure. The scene was shot in almost total darknes.

emgy, an almost mind boggling composition. a very interesting approach, really. i believe that underexposing one stop could have improved the impression somewhat.
