From the technical side of things, I'd say you rose to this particular black and white challenge quite well. The exposure and the contrast looks great and there's a great balance between light and shadow without one overwhelming the other. I would prefer to see a bit more detail in the foreground woodpiece. I have a feeling it's there . . . could you try to coax it out a little?
I can appreciate what you are doing with this shot compositionally. The context is nice, especially with the aforementioned light/dark contrasts. I do feel this photo would have more impact if the subject piece of wood was closer/filled more of the frame. I suppose that's fairly cliche though . . . perhaps a vertical shot? Hmmm . . . At the very least, I feel the right part of the photo should be cropped to eliminate the white branch tips. I really like their white glow, but I feel they're in that limbo state between being in the photo and not being in the photo. :-)

Hi Stefan,
really strange natural phenomenon. personally, I would love to see a "look-thru" picture (with the tree in the middle and more zoomed in) and a stronger DOF. take care, thilo

Like the picture, the piece infront..is it a piece of a hollow tree? Works well with the fallen tree in the backgroud & the light.
