Hi Ellen
I'm going to try and answer your DOF question as best as I can :-) It all depends on your f-stop setting as well as focus. Remember that I only use the auto function on my camera and obviously, I will achieve much better quality should I start using the manual settings.
What works for me is to sit back from the object, then zoom in slightly while keeping my focus on the object, and thus achieving my out of focus background. Obviously there is a much better technical instruction for achieving this :-)

This is just so clear it's amazing. Is it a setting on the camera that gently blures the background or just the distance to the background. Sorry this was asked badly, I hope you can make out what I'm trying to say. It's good to see you back. Merry Christmas.
