the white anthropomorphic form on the sea surface is fantastic! - i've never seen anything like that... you saw it very well and tilting the image slightly to the right has been very effective, in my opinion

it's no doubt the most interesting tree trunk i've seen for a long time...the whole luxagraphic effect is very pleasing as usual...good work James

hi Hugo,

i'm familiar with both your inspirations and i think they helped you effectively to make this beautiful photo
the personality of your car gives much more impact to the shot and the excellent lighting together with the cute decoration adds to the nice mood. as for the sunshields(?) on top, i also think they should have been cropped out.
it remains to be seen what other ideas (and songs) you have in mind but i know you are talented and skilful enough to create even better pictures of this kind in the future

well...i'm really flattered to have you and other fellow usefilmers talk about me like that. i hadn't shot any new 'nightrides' since my peugeot died in Dec2004 but i started again two months ago. to make it easier for anyone interested here's the direct link to my 'nightride' portfolio: http://www.usefilm.com/photographer.asp?ID=16994&PF=697

my best regards,

your excitement about your new camera is understandable Sophie, but that shouldn't make you pay less attention to the pictures you take with it... the lighting in this one is great and the selective focusing was a creative idea which unfortunately wasn't supported by a theme appropriate enough to make this image interesting, at least for me ;-)

anyway,be happy
and thanks for your comment :-)

not only your model is cute and expressive but he has also posed effectively enough to give this shot an added touch that - combined with the wonderful colors and your skilful composition- makes this portrait a pleasure to watch.
regards :-)

a nice compositional idea you had Marija... 'guided', in a way,by the focal length limitations of your camera. what i mean is that if your tiny pentax was equipped with a stroooonger telephoto then you might be tempted to isolate those reflections right away and play abstract with them, inevitably giving less attention to this Yellow Curve...
on a second thought, though, your compositional choice might as well be directed by this Yellow Curve itself, which looks dominant enough to force you deal with it anyway!

the colors are nice - if you shot this with your dslr you'd use a polarizer to improve them,of course...

i think that if i was there too and we had only your camera available then i'd shoot from a different angle so as to get the reflection of the whole building on the opposite glass

the focusing ring can be a highly effective tool for creative photographers,
and it's a matter of personal taste how far from the 'correct' point you will turn it.
anyway,i think i would defocus more these glass 'lenses' so as to get a more abstract feel...

Marija!
it's nice to see that your portfolio, your fanclub and your award collection have all grown bigger since the last time i was here here follows my first gentle comment after a month of inactivity:

the silhouettes of one lamp post and one man in front of some beautiful sky are often all that's needed for a strong image that usually conveys a solitary mood...provided all three of them cooperate succesfully to support this certain mood.
ok,you have all the essentials here...but the human factor had apparently something else in his mind and this makes his figure distracting,in my eyes at least. you see, after opening an image of this style i would expect myself to relax and enjoy the peaceful simplicity instead of thinking whether he is picking his nose or brushing his teeth...

should i comment on composition now?....

bye Marija,
and be happy!

oh yes, this is beautiful Guido! perfect timing and composition for this shot. the relaxed friendship moment together with the warm backlight create a really nice mood ;-)

the backlight effect is gorgeous here, but the large black section of the picture doesn't help, in my opinion...i might try different compositions -given the convenience of the zoom lens- so as to still show the Piazza but also make the shadow a more balanced element of the composition ;-)

you saw nicely the photographic potential of this, but in my opinion you should have worked more on the composition.
i attach an alternative, having taken out some elements i find distracting.i hope you don't mind ;-)

great light in this photo! the spark lines effect is of course nice, but even better is the balance it makes with the sweet ambient light. the blurred face of the girl kind of annoys me. not that i don't like blurrings and distortions in photography :-P, but in this image i would like to see either a less blurred face or a different blurred effect or no face at all. i have shot similar pictures more than once and i know it's hard to keep the performers still. i can't afford much film so i rarely try more than a couple shots hoping for a keeper, but i usually choose to either exclude the face from the frame or -more often- go for a more abstract feel.
be happy Michael! :-)

i like the close-up view of the soldiers. in my opinion the lighting on them is too harsh to fit with the sky behind - it's like they were lit with studio lights in the battlefield. if you gave them less exposure or softwared them appropriately the effect might be more natural ;-)

hello Dave :-)
software treatment is a matter of personal taste and in my eyes the unfiltered version is way better than the other one...it is a wonderful landscape shot with fantastic light that loses much of its impact with the filtering, at least for me ;-)
