I don't think you've failed with your attempt, but I would also really like to see this with the clarity and sharpness of the original. It's got great lines, beautiful backlighting and excellent DOF.

...very delicate...I like the tones and the simple compo...perhaps just a tad more contrast in the thin stream of water in the center and more darkness at the corners...that would draw the eys more into the center of the image - where the action is - I like it very much..K

I like this Robert.
Dark areas recede. So maybe go in and burn in small shadow areas to give 'em a little more depth.
Might also try flipping it left to right, ... see what happens.

Thanks for the comment Ryan. No PS work was done on this one, just a straight scan of Velvia with a very polarized Fall sky. This was the first batch of slide film I ever shot and as you might guess I was very impressed.

Thanks Hugo for the comments. The black line in the upper right corner (part of the boat) has been taken care of with a little crop. Funny how we sometimes miss such obvious problems in our own images.
As for the DOF, I had to use a pretty fast shutter speed since the boat was bobbing up and down pretty good. The trick was catching a well focused, well exposed shot with the flags blowing just right. It only took about 130 shots to get one I liked.
Thanks again for the comment.

Hi Robert, The translucency of both the navigation light and through the flags make this image tick. Also, the diagonal composition of the main rig works well. The line in the top right corner is a bit distracting, though. The choice fo the shallow DOF, only hinting at the clouds in the sky would initially not be my solution, but I think it works better than with a wider DOF. Good shot, interesting capture.
Cheers,
Hugo

This is great. I agree, some of the most photographable of macros are under your feet. But I do like travel, as my portfolio shows. It's so hard to get quick movers, like your angry friend here. Fine detail and colour on this mantis macro.
