Interesting soup, ben - seems to give you a soft toning of the picture. Love the Death Valley Junction and especially Bad Water. Great place to take pictures and you have a fine camera to do that... best from Germany, Thomas

Ben,
That definitely qualifies as "alternative process"! The results look pretty good...subtle, but good.

Great mood. Fantastic clarity. Don't see how you could have improved it. Very well done. Nice portfolio too.

Very impressive shot. Caught my eye right away. I like the sliver of light on the distant peak. The clouds look otherworldly. Your choice of B&W is very effective. Excellent in every way!

Dramatic, atmospheric, certainly not what I expect of a Death Valley landscape. The foreground looks like a moonscape, the background could be the Sandias... or the Andes! Great tones, DOF, desert clarity of light. Great job, and congratulations on BIP, ben.

yeah, funny.. i am in connecticut now.. i remember about three other guys out there that morning.. I parked at badwater and walked in a couple of hundred yards towards the mountains.. I was there for a week but barely saw 1/10th of the park.. And I was out every day for 6-8 hours hiking and taking photos..

Cant wait to get back~

ben, interesting. must've been the 4th. i shot the morning of the 5th and stopped when it started to dump snow at altitude. we shot from the west side road where it crosses the salt pan. i guess you must've been at the devil's golf course. strange how you can be a few miles apart and then run into each other's photos on the internet :^)

take care,
tom

Hi,
I took the photo on the morning of the 4th or 5th of December... Stood out on the salt for three very cold hours hoping th eclouds would do something interesting.. I also remember that one stormy dday later that week, very nice clouds on that day.. 1st time out there, definitley going back when i get a chance..

Thanks for your comments..

ben, excellent shot of this very difficult subject! what an awesome sky the valley blessed you with on this day. was it shot recently? i was just there in early december but got a completely cloudless day along with a stormy, overcast second day. all i managed to get was the very beginnings of sunrise. oh well, another excuse to go back again ;^)

i like your choice of b&w here. it makes the scene awash with detail. i assume you shot this at 18mm because of the immense dof you got out of f/16. although jose has a point in that there is no obvious foreground to hold the attention, you have managed to do that (for me) in a very subtle way. the difference in light (caused by cloud shadows, i assume) brightness halfway to the mountains does the trick just fine. well done!

take care,
tom

Congratulations, an image that'd make any landscape/nature photographer proud. Tones, depth of focus, etc are excellent.

My only consideration is that I feel there's distance but not depth on it. I believe this sensation comes from the fact there are no lines driving the eyes. On the foreground there's a mix o lines, the ones on the sky are not helping since there's no common point. Maybe this sensation is only mine.

A very good image. Well done!

Regards from Brazil,

Jose Azevedo
