Bill, I found that the Minolta Z1 was the best all round camera in the prosumer SLR segment. It has a 38 to 380 telephoto lens and in super macro it can focus (and autofocus)to 4cm from the lens. It has a magnified area for manual focus. It shoots continuous at 1.5 fps and high speed at 10 fps and has a flash range of 6m.

I am not familiar with the Canon G5, but I saw the new Canon S1 IS today. Reading the specs and reviews, it seems to fall short of the Z1/Z2 in a number of areas; the close-up focus is 10cm, it has pronounced purple fringing, shot to shot speed is slower, start up time is slower, flash range of 3.8m, the LCD does not adjust for ambient light, but swivels and it does have an image stabilised lens and remote control as an option.

Actually all we need now is an achromatic diopter lens for the Minolta for big magnifications. The single element close-up lenses that I have, tend to give chromatic abberations.

Hope this helps in your trial runs. Robert

This is an excellent "save" of a photo you might have deleted, actually your daughter is prettier than Mona! The spots in the background could be painted out or left in to give a worn look to the painting. Nice job.

Arwa, it's a BIG zoo on the side of a hill, there is a cablecar to take you to to the top of the hill or you can hire golf carts to drive around. I still haven't seen all the animals yet and Linn and I spent two days there! There is a map showing the zoo in relation to the centre of Pretoria in my comment at: http://www.usefilm.com/image/422761.html

Chris, I was looking at your previous image earlier today and thinking that I would look to see it from the opposite direction, and my wish has been granted. This is a fabulous view of the town and castle, and I'm looking forward to you posting another taken from the fort on top of the hill! Excellent depth of field and the colour is superb. Regards, Robert

Arwa, it looks like you don't need a tripod! You held it pretty well for that slow shutter speed.
You chose the perfect time of day to take this picture, any other time it would just be a picture of a sculpture, but you have made it come alive. It's warm and comforting and has depth with interesting side attractions. Great job, well done. Greetings Robert

Wow, look at the size of his pecker! You could have tried a bit of fill-in flash here, but you might have got a result like the attached pic of an owl (red eye reduction doesn't work with owl eyes!). I like the vivid colours. Robert

There aren't too many telephoto options for "consumer" digitals that work well, I'm still looking. Rob

Taras thank you for you comments, I had a look at your images and they are super. I hadn't done much planning, except for dusting off my tripod and taking a few shots before the eclipse started. The Minolta has a 38-380 (35 SLR equiv.) optical zoom, but I also used the 4x digital zoom (giving 1520mm) so that I could see what I was doing! I also used the self timer to prevent shake. It is getting into winter here and there is also a lot of dust and smoke in the air, which might account for some decrease in quality. The Minolta also doesn't have a raw format save option, and I think the compression and noise reduction algorithm do some weird things to the image. The lens is also infamous for its purple fringing with high contrast shots! Till next time.

Robert
