This is probably a better color adjusted photo and more acurately portrays the printed copy. Thank goodness I'm learning more about color!!

Nice model but I'm with Shane with respect to the lighting.
My understanding is that a ring flash is currently a "hot" style with some fashion photographers but I think moving the model a bit so she's away from the background may help with the shadows. I still think side and hairlighting would go great with this shot but I also know that you work with what you have.
Keep at it. Cheers Dave

Thanks for the comments.
The plan was to use studio strobes, which I will try again soon, but seeing as how I didn't have them yet, I used what was available, and unfortunately a 20mm lens isn't covered by the 420EX flash. I had to maximize my flash useage by not bouncing the flash as I normally would (which would have softened the light and resulted in tones/contrast that wasn't as harsh as what you see here).
Will I be able to recreate this expression? I don't think so but who knows.. it's worth a try
Cheers, Dave

Hmm.. I looked up the word "abstract" @ Dictionary.com - I could have used my "analogue" dictionary but figured I'm online.. why bother. Here's what dictionary.com has to say:
1 Considered apart from concrete existence: an abstract concept. 2 Not applied or practical; theoretical. See Synonyms at theoretical. 3 Difficult to understand; abstruse: abstract philosophical problems. 4 Thought of or stated without reference to a specific instance: abstract words like truth and justice. 5 Impersonal, as in attitude or views. 6 Having an intellectual and affective artistic content that depends solely on intrinsic form rather than on narrative content or pictorial representation: abstract painting and sculpture.
So, by looking at a definition of the word "abstract" and knowing that this has been classified as such, I would state that; while I don't get it - because there's not enough there for me to "get" - I do think that this image falls under definition #'s 1, 3 and 6.
The photographer, while asking for critique, has responded in such a way that makes me think that he falls under definition #5.

This is an extremely good photo. I like it and it captured my attention almost immediately; but, Is this infrared film? Is this digital? Is this cross processed? How long of an exposure?
It's a quirk of mine to want to see a bit of technical details surrounding photos, especially good ones, so I can learn a bit about the technical side of them.

Hmmm...
The tonal range of the water is great. I like that. The fence/wire do-dad is in definite contrast to the water but I'm not sure I get it. I don't get most abstract stuff though. It's an interesting image but I'm just too goofy to figure it out :-)

Dean,
It _is_ XP2. The contrast on that Canon lens, if you've ever used a GIII-QL17 is incredible. It compares to the standard Leica Summicron 50mm f2 or the Contax 45mm f2 for the G series cameras. An old camera with a great lens does wonders.
I also, if I remember correctly, shot this at 200 rather than the rated 400 thereby also bumping up the contrast.
Any C-41 film I use, I try, if it's not a high contrast film, to overexpose a stop in order to bump up contrast.
With respect to the dark areas, agreed, but again the older camera does not have an exact meter.

Beautiful image!
The tip of the boat in the foreground does not detract the eye from the center of the image (the big plume of clouds) so this is very nice.
As for the scans - I would strongly suggest; if you are going to scan negatives on a regular basis that you invest in a dedicated film scanner. As Andrew suggested, Nikon, Polaroid or Minolta (I have the Scan Elite II) will all produce great scans.
Cheers, Dave

Joy,
Having shot with Pentax in the past (and still have an old body/lens) - it's not the body. The sharpness would be linked to the lens - f5.6 is, in my humble opinion, good for portraits. The Ilford 400 (I don't know if you used Delta 400 or HP5+) is fine for film.
The lens, however, probably isn't all that sharp if it's an 80-300 zoom. If possible, try out an older SMC-A 100mm f2.8 (or any of the 100mm f2.8 lenses), and see the difference in sharpness. If that is too out of reach financially, you should be able to pick up a rather inexpensive SMC-M 50mm f1.4 lens which is extremely sharp. Not the best for portraiture but still very good!
Hope this helps, Dave

To paraphrase Dr. Evil "I don't know lighting" but I do like the way this is lit. I know what a snoot is, and I know what gels are and I like the result. I think you've got a winner with this one.

Dig the light and I like the tilted horizon idea.
For those of you who remember the old "Batman" TV series... why is it that I get the feeling I'm in the Riddler's Lair when I look at this photo ?

Model is relaxed and seductive. Great shot and I don't think there could be an improvement... maybe a full length horizontal shot of the model laying down ?

I've been following this series - I love the color in them - excellent reproductions - I never seem to get that type of color out of NPC - must be my lab. Anyway, this model is perfect. If you can use her again William, I'd say do it. She seems at ease. I do like the second crop better (it's not until you remove those background flowers do you notice that they were distracting in the first place) Well captured.
