A wonderful composition in many regards. Excellent camera control and choice of timing for the most effect on the water. Very nice.

all the best, -mm

There is a lot to love about this one Robert. Nice job on the exposure and the choice of details for infrared. The reflections are awesome. Can you help us with some details? Exposure info ? I this a converted D70 or shot with an IR filter? What lens? I have a Nikon Coolpix 5400 that I have considered as an IR candidtae from Lifepixel. Let us know! Great job my friend.

cheers, -mm

I grew up in this area but never saw it in winter, We only went during summers. I love this. I have often done exactly what you say in your" about" , back up and capture the moment. Love the feeling of the cold and partially frozen water.

This is my kind of place. I love this shot. I can hear the water and feel the solitude. Nice job, the long exposure is a great choice. 1 or 2 seconds? Well done.

HI Maryanne, great move from the 6006 to the D50. You'll never look back. I could have bought 3 D50's for what I spent on developing costs with my 6006. I think this shot probably looked different than what you saw there. The light is a little flat (looks like an overcast day) and that can make the color look dull. A couple easy things you can do with the camera. 1) Use the sRGB color space instead of the default RGB. It's called IIIa in the shooting menu.It produces more vivid color.
2) Make sure your white balance is set properly. A WB setting of shade will warm the color slightly.
3)In photoshop you can give the shot more pop by boosting the saturation slightly in the Image>adjustments>hue/saturation menu. The last tip is so easy but you have to use it judiciously. Go to Filter>Sharpen>unsharpmask. Try a setting of 28% on the level and 24 pixels on the radius. Voila! Instant contrast boost. I posted the edit here with those adjustments? What do you think? Hope this helps.

Outstanding photo. I love the texture and lighting on the clouds. Just curious, did you use a tripod and pan across or just stand in one spot and turn? I see no distortion at all in the horizon. Congrats on the DoD.

Awesome shot, great post production work and how can you argue with the choice of subject matter. Normally you see these as panoramas from a horizontal view but this is perfect as a vertical. The clouds are amazing. Very nice Joggie.

Beautiful macro, the detail, lighting and color are perfect. Is this a cicada? Many hot summer nights listening to them if so.

Nice , I love that spot Craig. I was back in SF in Sept but it was foggy every morning and afternoon all 3 days I was there. Makes me homesick. Great job.

Hugo,

Much deserved award here, congrats! It was fun to read the whole thread, sorry I missed it initially. I think the print is fantastic at that size, it looks amazing. How does it look on the canvas? Any loss of fine detail? Just curious on the cost to print that size? Well done and a great story that should inspire all of us to jump in with both feet! (Pun intended)

Hey Sasca, well deserved award. Everything is perfect. Nicely executed idea. I love architecture. Check out Julius Shulman's work. I'm going to an exhibition of his work here in Chicago.

Thanks Sandra. I must admit that I personally like this shot more. There was nothing added here. No toning, PS , nothing. The color is from the late afternoon light and the mix of black and white smoke. I think there is always a preference for BW in Journalism shots. Thanks!

Thanks Mike. I shot about 200 yesterday, lots of drama. I posted 3 more earlier today if you look back a liitle or in my portfolio. The light and smoke was very intense and made for some graet opportunities. Thanks for the comment.

Nice shot Rob, I'm jealous. I can only wish to get to such an awesome place. Love the Rockies and this has a great use of foreground perspective. My only gripe is I wish the light was a little better (a little less shadows). Don't get me wrong, the shot is a stunner no less!

WOW , This is stunning. Really nice natural lighting here. The colors look very real and natural. I would expect this at the beach. You managed to get the full range of tones and it's perfect. Love the shadows and the clouds.

WOW. I knew from the thumbnail that this was a stunning shot and it is. Congratulations on the BIP, it really sums up the project perfectly. I have to disagree with the suggestions about cropping this shot. Not only is the black a great addition to the yellow/gold tones, it also creates a nice negative space with which we can imagine the shoreline or whatever lies beyond. The lower colors of blue/gold are so soothing and beautiful it would be a shame to crop them as it lends to the overall "peace and tranquility". The shot works fine just as it is. Well done, well seen, well shot, well deserved award.

Hi Andree,

Been away for awhile but it's nice to come back and find a beautiful shot like this. Has it all, very pleasant composition, sharp, love the muted colors and the lone silhouette with the hat!
A perfect shot.

cheers,
