First of all, I am amazaed by the many good and insightful critiques by UF friends. And all this is inspired by you, dear Ina! I was wondering how you layered the image and what was the source of the scribbles. So it is the tablet - very promising. Warm regards, Gyuri

I think instinctively, we look for meanings within scribbles. NY is such an emotionally and energetically charged city. When even one person says something, it has weight.

Thank you so much Andrzej, you seem to be so in-tune with the NYC art history! Amazing comment, I really enjoyed it! I'm trying to find a new direction, maybe more PS and less picture-taking, which I find - given the long winter - that I won't be going out to confront the elements too soon! Working on a collage takes more time than I thought, and it slows me down considerably, especially when it comes to writing! Your comments are always very much appreciated :)

Thanks Gyuri for your amazing analogy, I never thought about the constructivists, but now that you've shed light on my work, I can see it! I'm getting used to my new graphic tablet, and as you can see, I'm using the pen to do scribbles and this can be a new direction that interests me a lot! Cheers, Ina

Thanks very much Mark! I'm very interested in the text to image relationship, and although the scribbles don't exactly mean anything - they do recall layers of meaning and give the opportunity for different interpretations, which is great! Really great :)

Hi Aram, very original idea! I never looked at it this way, I've been using scribbles in the past in my drawings - over an image, more as a pattern, never as a coherent text. I'll try to incorporate some more in the future. I have a pen that I can write with (instead of a mouse) and find it quite interesting - new possibilities! Thanks very much for your in-depth comment :) Best regards, Ina

Thanks very much Kathy! I love your interpretation, the way drawings and papers are thrown together on a desk! I love to try something of a "loose collage" - I'm still in the experimental stages :)

Thanks Susie, I love the idea of travel stickers on a suitcase, you are right! And so are my friends who saw an architectural sketch on a napkin, a travel journal, a scrapbook, and a mural. I'm really happy when I can transmit an idea and it still leaves room for interpretation. I'm contemplating collages (still not sure about them with my stuff), but I'd like to use them in a loose way. More to come :)

Thanks Rina so much for your nice comment! I thought of it as a mural too, more of a modest type (i.e. on a Starbucks wall) but it seems to have that look, as well as a paper napkin/ scrapbook/ suitcase stickers, etc. I'm trying to work on this idea with collages and scribbles - actually it's not a new one, I've done that in my real drawings, but this is the first time I've used it on a picture. Really appreciate it :) Ina

A tireless imaginative mind Ina.
The colour, style and blend of each layer all competing with one another for attention, yet somehow, perfectly united as a whole. Complete. As Hugo has mentioned - coherent.
I can see this gracing an entire wall. In a trendy NYC cafe, and yes, even an art gallery.
Cheers Rina

Nice composition. The scribble ambiance is a good means to conciliate the eye with the huge building: it becomes something that can be played with on the paper. That's what do the children in their plays: they create models of whatever bothers them and overcome it in the play space!...

Another creative display from you Ina. I get the feeling you never just "throw something together"...it appears much thought and imagination go into each creation. I get the feeling of layers of travel stickers on an old suitcase for some reason. I really like this. To the front page I'm sure...which award though? ) Susie

Ina,
I just wanna to say that your picture here is a very conceptual reading of the artistic spirit of the NYC, NY. In this multi messaging scrap board concept you've designed the frame to it holds a bit of imaginative layer in it to express that some basic knowledge of the city cultural avangarde is required, to properly read the message.
Beautiful down play of colors with a focus on the key ones highlighting the admiration to the place.
The specific one scene is perfectly laid out collage that is set to sens the city spirits in architecture and visual arts. It is the image of the city that is full of colors, reach smells and is a destination for those who love the vibrant artistic life and happenings.
Great job to express all that in one frame Ina. I realy like your NYC.
Cheers, n.j

The writings make it personal. One gets an impression that it's made up of thousands of people and generations. It reminds me of billboards, murals, and collages, and the random qualities that produces memorable works.

Hi Ann - you're right on the money as always - architectural sketches on napkins :-) The lower left hand corner in fact is meant to look like a blueprint! The top L/H is a "coffee stain" - well, sort of... I should have scanned a ragged paper napkin edge, you know, the perforated type, to make the transition to the black area, but, I missed that. The drawings are almost like elevations, and the inspiration was Andy Warhol, for most part. It's also a scrapbook/ memoir/ travel log/ etc. etc. and a way to conclude the NY series (for now). Ann I'm really happy with your reading and thanks very much for your in-depth analysis, and great observations! Cheers, Ina

Ina the arhcitect. :) To me this one has a feel of Ina's prototype sketches of the plan of the building of NYC. this building here and that building there......or perhaps the Chrysler building might look better over there. Hmm....perhaps Ina go have lunch and come back later to resketch again later. :) I too am kind of restricted as to your thoughts on this one but never hte less those are my thoughts for what they are worth. :) I do like it and find it quite intriguing.
Cheers - Ann

Thanks very much Mark for having the courage (like Hugo) to analyze this one! It's true, it looks like a postcard, or some sort of scrapbook & I like the travel log analogy! It's one of those times when I feel there's a need for a change in my pages, and I thought NY is also a hub for modern art, so I'm concluding my mini-series with something less documentary, and more akin to graphic arts. It is also a memoir, I'm trying to illustrate an impression more than a particular sight, and I felt the scribbles are in a way related to the graffitti, the photo noise is related to the grunginess, soot, etc. It's great to hear what you've read into it, which is very accurate. I have been inspired by the idea of text & image, that's why I got pretty excited the other day about your book project :) Thanks again, Ina

Thank you Hugo for having the courage :) to critique this one! I sometimes like to try something different, and this is one of those cases where I combined images in a collage and turned the pictures into drawings, as well as used some hand writing, scribbles and noise. NY is a great place for the modern arts, a lot of new trends and ideas came from there, and I thought it was a nice way to conclude the NY series. This is a decorative collage, something inspired by Andy Warhol and a few others. I really appreciate your comment - and the time you took to analyze this! And remember it was that series of yours about the "incomprehensible" that's still in my mind. Best regards, Ina

A place so nice they named it twice! I've got to go down to NY NY, even if for nothing more than the pictures! One could very easily spend a lifetime shooting the street scenes and architecture alone, as I'm sure many have!
But to the point. I love the travel log feel of this shot. Original and appealing. Almost a postcard, but intead it's a memoir, which I think has far more appeal. And the darker square overlaying the central image adds a lot in a central echo of the other askance elements in this shot. It contributes greatly to the scrapbook sort of feel to this. Very well done Ina!
Best, Mark

Hi Ina, as this sort of imagery is usually entirely build around the artist (appropriate phrasing here) views, I find it usually very difficult to say something useful...;) What I like in this one, is that you somehow maintained the feel of perspective, creating the depth by the perspective in the building, but also using a cool blending with the sketch of the ESB. Eventhough the elements and scribbles seem to be placed randomly, there's a nice coherence within those elements and the entire comp. The line drawing on the far right seems to be a bit more detached from the rest, though. Repeating it from the vague sketch on the left border is nice, but I think I would've broken the transition between the "pastel tear sheet" and the black a bit. But hey. That's just me.
Cheers,
Hugo
