About Kathakali dancer applying makeup. This is very elaborate process and what you see here, the facial make up, is just the very beginning. Ultimately, he will end up with 35kg of additional weight in the shape of costume. All the paints are natural, based on plant or mineral pigments and coconut oil.

The dance form itself is very stylized and formal and definitely grand. I'm not sure my photographs will do it justice.
