Nice translucence in the petals. I would have preferred the more didtant petals to be out of focus rather than the nearest but simply a matter of tate.

Thank you for your comment on the Maid of the mist. When I posted the photo I vdidnt know what title to give. So I gave the Boat Ride title to this shot.

Hmmm. I agree with you about not plucking flowers, and with the sun sinking fast this is a very good shot by any standards. I do think you can argue it both ways, though. There's a sense in which large, out-of-focus foreground petals could distract attention away from the sharp stamens beyond them. It is the photographer who decides, of course!

I'm not sure I agree with you, Roger, on the need for greater DoFas I think the fact that the foreground petals are defocused tends tro concentrate attention on the yellow stamens. I could have done without the shadow of the stamens though. With the sun sinking fast, there was barely enough light to hand hold this anyway.

I don't like plucking flowers and prefer to shoot them in situ. So I'm usually stuck with available light or flash. Occasionally I'll shoot flowers obtained at the florist's though and then I have more scope to play with the light and exposure. I might post examples of that if I can get my scanner to start working again. In the mean time, for what it's worth, these strawberries were shot using one of my preferred techniques:

Very nice, and well cropped/framed. But I think it needed a little more DOF...
