A lovely image with the main subject clearly separated from the evenly out of focus background. I like the colour and the composition of the crop - all well done Doyle. My only (nitpicky) comment would be that the bee could do with a little bit more contrast to show it of against the flower better and secondly the frame is nice but slightly heavy - crowding the photo. Both these remarks do not detract from a lovely image though! Well done. Joggie

Wonderful macro Doyle! I like the shot as is, the crop is appealing to me with the bee on the left with the nice empty space on the right, very appealing and does not send the eyes directly to the center as in the original, I also think the removal of the dark negative space to the left of the subject is a plus... Your work is always a pleasure to view doyle.....

Thanks so much for the comment! As it happens, you're 100% correct. I set up knowing the bee would be back (or some bee would) and therefore, I was able to focus, lock and wait. Honestly took very little time. The hummingbird, dubbed Gumby now, comes at about 15 minute intervals so I had time, while waiting, to go for this shot. I had captured a bee's wings earlier . . . but wanted a better comp . . . And this little guy was perfectly willing to comply!

Very smart and sharp. Good job ! not veryeasy to make such a clear shot of bee, but you did it perefectly. and in this posture of wings and that's really awsome. Im pretty much sure you were focusing on a shot like this. because it has a very good stand and contrast with the background, just because of its wind and body 90 degrees angle.
very very well done!
Best shots, Ardalan.

Hi Doyle, excellent picture. One of the best i have seen from you. i really like the blurry background, and the composition is really good. If the bee was in the middle of the picture it might have got boring. But at 1/3 of the picture, just excellent. There is just one little thing im not sure about, and that is the frame. I dont think it really adds something to the picture, becose the picture is so nice it speaks for itself, so in my opinion no need for the frame!
cheers, Lex.

The quality framing of the original is not less than the cropped one, great parameters selection to get such sharp clear details with best of dof to figure out the bee perfectly. to me the close crop helped also concentrating on the main subject with well of centered presentation. Superb work. Saeed

The United Fotographers emblem suits me just fine: I'm posting pics of Tarifa while I'm in Warsaw and starting another round of travels shortly. Would seem dishonest to use the Union Flag as I don't live THERE anymore, so the Universal Flyer seems like the Ultimate Flag for me!
Hope Santa's stocking his sack with lots of lenses and other goodies...

Immediate reaction: the bee would look superb against that yellow/green background on the right of the image. Technically, though, with this crop everything is in the right place regarding composition.
Where's Gumby? Oh sorry, forgot. He's only talking to Marlyce these days...

Thanks very much J for spending time on my shot . . . I value this kind of input immensely. First off . . . I agree completely that a contrasting BG color would have been ideal . . . As you point out, a minor consideration and, as it happens, unavoidable. I was not there to shoot honeybee pictures but rather, to catch a hummingbird. This is also why the lens was not the best choice for this type of shot. I also agree that the composition is brilliant and inspired work! LoL! The Sigma 150 Macro is a good lens, but I usually use an even better lens for these types of shots; a Nikon 105mm micro - f/2.8! I'm incredibly happy with that one even though it was absurdly expensive. When combined with extension tubes or a macro converter - there's almost nothing it can't do! Again, thanks very much for the comment!

Very nice close up, the clarity on the bee is good as the details viewed well on its wings and body too. Not sure if here needs a bit more contrast but not big deal, love even the blur background that support the main object and gives nice composition of colors! Mostly the scale of the background (from the dark to the bright areas). Also good position of the main object that takes the right part of the image (nothing centered) Very good shot Doyle. hmmm...and good quality even you crop it so strongly! I sujest you a lens...try to see Sigma 150 macro, REALLY SUPER! Bye!
