Hi Ina,I would have played with the white balance but you do have some lovely tones...the feathers are a lttle bit over-exposed,but anyway I like this picture alot! kind regards,riny

Andre, I took a chance, it was that or no bird picture. I knew if I focussed in the distance the dirt and scratches on the glass didn't matter. It's the same when you shoot through branches, the ones very close to you seem to disappear.

Isn't it ironic that we go to the trouble of choosing high quality lenses with our cameras and still end up with great shots shooting through an old etched plate glass window :)

I suppose with a bird feeder I would catch more, but it's not practical: first the mess, then there are hawks around. I don't want to set up a trap. Hi Ina:
I really like the framing and backlighting as well as the crisp detail and bold color on this little birdie. They are often so fast and fleeting that this shot is really a great achievement to a real challenge. Well shot, great photograph. Some might scowl at the highlights but for me it's more important to bring out the details of the bird the way you have it.

Thanks very much Andre! I had the door closed, and I knew that if I had opened it, the bird would have flown before I could take a picture. This way, the bird couldn't see or hear me, I was standing about 7 ft. away from it and got 5 shots in RAW at approx. 240mm before it flew. The others flew away seconds before, this one stayed a bit behind. The glass is not tinted, but it's old and etched by weather. I had a few white spots which I cleaned in PS - which might have been snow flakes, and have done levels/ contrast/ saturation/ sharpening but no more than the regular adjustments I do on any other picture. It was a lucky combination of the bird being in the right place with the right lighting :)

Great capture of a very pretty bird Ina, beautiful colours, great light and exposure, sharp focus, very good job considering it was through the window. We've got feeders out but not too many birds around here so far this year, maybe too exposed. You were very fortunate to have them visit your balcony.

Thank you very much Dave, I wasn't expecting these guys, as I don't have a bird feeder. I get the occasional pigeons and starlings basking in the sun. Unfortunately the glass is etched by acid rain, can't clean it anymore :-(
