To be honest, I was surprised how few people complained about it . . . knowing, as I do, that many dislike them!
I was about to throw this comment on top of all the rest (as requested) until I saw that . . . so you'll have to get used to being under them all instead!! :P
I always prefer honesty my friend . . . and your opinion, even though wrong (about the frame), is still valuable!! LoL!

looks like you have plenty of comment on this puppy already,,,but i have to say it is a good one for sure...so there, throw this comment on top of all the rest.....lol.
One thing though...and i hope you don't mind, and this is a personal perspective. I find the framing a bit distracting, as it is so busy that to my eye it diminishes some of the overall power of your wonderful image.

Thanks Steve . . . this image was processed more rapidly because I spent a great deal of time on the B&W desturation and knew it would be a while. This on the other hand - was almost good to go from the start. I was pleased with this (and rightfully so) but the dramatic B&W was certainly a much more difficult image to work! Appreciate the comments.

No worries . . . I know the 'party' life is part of the Viking genetic makeup. If you want to see the left-side it's in the next posting . . . I chose not to clone the glimpse of the dark, left wall, because at full resolution there is a BIT more depth and you can see it's a cave wall much more clearly. It shows nicely on the print too!
Soo Off you go to Jutland . . . and party like it's 1699!!!! LoL! I always know you'll be back!! (With photos)? :)

Congratulations on the award, Doyle!:-) Well-deserved only would I have liked to see the left side all dark, but tht´s just a minor detail. Wonderful tones and clarity, and I really think you did a great job on framing this and also using text which is sth. that I usually don´t like that much. Very pro!

Yes, I shot hand held with zoom. I almost always have to handhold for the animal shots. In fact, I don't recall posting any shots of animals that were NOT handheld . . . it may not look like it in this shot . . . but they're very uncooperative about posing! :P
Having seen the movement inside . . . I zoomed in hoping for a 'magic' shot, with just the head in the light . . . but it was quite dark inside, and I had metered for the opening of the cave . . . when he started coming out I waited till he was where I KNEW he would have to be but the ISO and metering were set for the darker, deeper shot. Luckily, I shoot in RAW which can give me two full stops to adjust, but I quickly remetered the exposure and the ISO remained. Ideally, I would have put it at 400 since it was getting 'dusky' anyway.

Yes, the pattern is distinctive to the breed and, you're right, it's quite a sight. As I recall, both the males and the females had the markings and both have beards as well. Have to check the photos when I get home . . . Oooops . . . later . . . it's tax weekend AND I'm working Saturday - LoL! (Sort of!)

Thanks Jan . . . There was something inside the cave . . . I was lucky to get a series as he emerged (to about here), looked around, turned around, and went back inside. I suspect he had some food. Dominant male had just taken the crest above the cave and the other had just cut through the pass (other two shots) and I suspect he was trying to place where everyone was.
I have a great picture of his backside as he went back in too! LoL!

Thanks Onie! The Rocky pass from the troublesome shot is 20 to 25 feet left of this cave opening. The shot of the dominant male is from the top of the pass. All relatively good and natural settings but Oooooooh . . . drat the issues with that pass!! LoL! You're right . . . no BG issues here (Whew!).

This is real beautiful! the male is a great specimen, so pround and yet aware of your attention. Or was it having harmful thoughts?????
