About Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.//
The photograph on the dashboard, taken years ago,//
turned around backwards so the windshield shows. //
Every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse. //
Still, it's so much clearer.//
I forgot my shirt at the water's edge.//
The moon is low tonight.////

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.//
I'm not sure all these people understand.//
It's not like years ago//,
The fear of getting caught,//
of recklessness and water.//
They cannot see me naked.//
These things, they go away,//
replaced by everyday.////

Nightswimming, remembering that night.//
September's coming soon.//
I'm pining for the moon.//
And what if there were two//
Side by side in orbit//
Around the fairest sun?//
That bright, tight forever drum//
could not describe nightswimming.//

You, I thought I knew you.//
You I cannot judge.//
You, I thought you knew me, //
this one laughing quietly underneath my breath.//
Nightswimming. //

The photograph reflects,//
every streetlight a reminder.//
Nightswimming deserves a quiet night,// deserves a quiet night.//////////////////// Tonite crank up "Automatic for the People" and go "Nightswimming." Amazing things might happen.

Jim, you just quoted one of my favorite songs of all time, which of course biases me to begin with. I have only one nit here, which is that I so wish the fin on the left frame were not cropped. But nonetheless, this is phenomenal work.

Thanks for the enthusiastic comments. A couple responses:

Ronny:

This one went very quickly, just a couple of hours -- probably because I've been doing a series using the same basic techniques and am finally starting to get the hang of it. As with most of the other images in my portfolio, this is what I call a composite photo illustration -- which basically means it's several different images that have been "composited," or blended together, using Photoshop Layers. Sometimes I get an idea which reminds me of something in my archives. In this case, I went out and shot the images pretty much with this scene in mind.

Unfortunately, I don't have the resources -- for models, stylists, etc. -- or the patience, for that matter, to do something this complex from scratch. So, I often work from sculpture. This has its pros and cons. One big pro is that you have a very good idea of what you're going to get before you even press the shutter. The biggest con is that you have to schedule your shooting carefully to get the right sun angles. The sculptures I used in this image are near life-size and are located on the "malecon," or waterfront esplenade, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I knew that for this composite I needed a strongly backlit photo, so I waited until late afternoon, just a couple of hours before sunset. I took a total of six images, three of each figure -- which, for me, at any rate, is extraordinarily economical.

Mark:

Funny you should mention this. I don't use a chair anymore. Instead, I have something called a "Gymnastik Ball," it's one of those plastic inflatable exercise balls. I wouldn't exactly call it comfortable, but that's partly the idea. I may spend all day and much of the night at the computer, but I'm never "sitting still."

In Transit:

Comment on the lyrics would best be sent to Michael Stipe of REM.

Anna K:

True, if you're night swimming, we cannot see you naked, but that doesn't mean we won't be trying.

Thanks gang;
Jim

Jim; this is cool! You continue to push the limits of what's possible with photo art. As in this work, you have gone well beyond conventional photography, and well into the realm of art. I like the feel of this, and especially the mermaid like "feet". Nice work.

So wonderful! I love everything about it, except that very light blue colour tones. But that's just personal taste I guess and emotional appeal is still 7. I wouldn't drag that down just because of my personal taste of colours!

Straight into my favorites - why? because it's such a beautiful picture, because "automatic for the people" is the best ever, because nightswimming got such a wonderful mood -the picture and the song.. So.. "my" song is "Find The River".. i'll never be able to make a picture to that one. Thanks for this

There is a question here... does one CRITIQUE or COMMENT upon the 'submitted Capture', or the 'About'? Both are deserving!

Wonderful! You're absolutely right about nightswimming. It's magic and you've captured some of that feeling here. Oh and thanks for the lyrics. The track Nightswimming is one of my all time favourites and I think I'm going to crank it up tonight also.

Big smile
