Dear Mr. Malcolmson, I have chosen this image as my favorite one of Christmas: the image of peaceful solitude. An inviting for meditation. Thank you for your posts and a Merry Christmas!

hi, david. thanks again for your comments on 'tara and jerred'. but about your picture: the diamond pattern is distracting, but you really did a great job on the light. i like it quite a bit, and i'm not much for such pictures. i think it really is the way you managed to balance shadow and highlight detail to capture the essence of the scene. j

this is really a beautiful photo and you've done the light extraordinarliy well. by keeping even a slight detail in the window, while still keeping plenty of detail in the room, you've captured the feeling of being in the room: the stillness, the distance from the outside world, and yet the presence of the world just beyond the window. however, i'd prefer the picture to be either more crooked or perfectly straight, and the pattern of shadowy chevrons is distracting. it looks like moire, an effect caused by scanning halftones incorrectly, but i have no idea how it might have occurred here. looks like you really pissed off manuela jarvis. you might want to offer an olive branch there.

hi, i've had a look at your portfolio but i'd like to make a global comment if you don't mind.. what's the point in arguing endlessly over technical matters which are rather easy to master anyway with a bit of practice without ever considering other matters which in the end make the difference.. there are probably thousands of pictures like this one taken every year in that particular place.. let's say that 90% of them are simply holiday pictures from photographers who let the camera decide what's good for them and from which one may luckily stand out from time to time.. 5% are taken safely using basic knowledge and very well known photographic rules, then bracketing on everything possible in order to make the best possible picture but the real point there is to get raw material for future use.. another 4% will be more or less successful direct creative attempts from photographers playing with the settings and the result will always be arguable on the creative side and sometimes improvable on the technical side.. and finally only 1% of these pictures will trully be outstanding on every aspects but often for no obvious reasons.. now consistency may be a decisive clue! where do you think you are david? having seen some of your pictures and read some of your comments, i have a quite clear idea but i'll keep it for myself because beyond the fairly good knowledge of the photographic process you seem to have i am absolutely stunned by your consistent narrowmindedness and great lack of imagination.. cheers anyway, mj

David,
The darkness and the overall tilt to this image is what makes it work. I like the tones here that you got with FP4. Is this scanned from the print or the neg? I might dodge the light falling on the wall a bit more but thats just my take. Either way its a wonderful image.
Well Done!

It is in situations like this that we can see the good photographer and you were great in my opinion. The poor light gives a touch of mystery and religiousness to the image, it remains me the doubt if it?s tilted deliberately or not, but the final effect is not bad though. Bye Max

Nicely done David, the light center with the window and crucefix are powerful symbols that are made even more so by your composition...
